HBO has built a reputation for producing prestige crime dramas that feel as authentic as they are gripping, and Task is no exception. Created by Mare of Easttown mastermind Brad Ingelsby, the seven-episode series combines tense FBI investigations with deeply human storytelling, brought to life by standout performances from Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, and Emilia Jones. While the show's layered characters and emotionally charged narrative have earned widespread praise, another element has quietly become one of its greatest strengths: its setting.
Rather than recreating Pennsylvania on studio backlots, Ingelsby insisted on filming Task in the communities that inspired the story, giving the series a realism that resonates in almost every frame.
From small-town diners and neighborhood bars to sprawling state parks and historic Philadelphia landmarks, here is every major filming location behind HBO's acclaimed crime drama, and why they were essential to bringing Task to life.

Every major filming location in HBO's Task, explained
For Brad Ingelsby, filming Task anywhere other than southeastern Pennsylvania was never an option. Having grown up on the outskirts of Philadelphia with much of his family still living in Delaware County, the Emmy-nominated writer once again returned to the region that previously shaped Mare of Easttown.
"The sense of duty and family I observed growing up in Delaware County has become a subject I’m very passionate about," Ingelsby had said in a press release for the show in September 2025. "I like writing characters and stories set in this region of Pennsylvania, and I wasn’t scared to return to a place I’ve come to know so well because it’s in the blood, in my veins, and I knew there was more material to mine," he expressed.
That philosophy is visible throughout the series. Instead of relying on constructed sets, Task unfolds across real neighborhoods, businesses, and landscapes that mirror the lives of the people at the center of the story. Much of the production took place throughout Delaware County, where FBI agent Tom Brandis, played by Mark Ruffalo, investigates a string of robberies targeting drug houses controlled by the notorious Dark Hearts motorcycle gang. The county's working-class neighborhoods provide the grounded backdrop that defines the show's tone, making the fictional investigation feel rooted in a very real community.
Several recognizable Delaware County landmarks also appear throughout the series. Production filmed at Ridley Creek State Park, whose forests, trails, and open spaces feature in a number of outdoor sequences. The crew also utilized Neumann University in Aston, Pennsylvania, along with the Marcus Hook Community Center overlooking the Delaware River.
Ingelsby also made a point of highlighting everyday local businesses that longtime residents would instantly recognize. Scenes were filmed inside Dixon's Lounge in Folsom, the beloved Upland Diner in Chester, and one of the area's many Rita's Italian Ice locations, helping the series capture the rhythm of daily life rather than simply presenting Pennsylvania as another anonymous television backdrop.
The production expanded beyond Delaware County into nearby Philadelphia, where several pivotal scenes were shot. Among the city's most recognizable locations is Ralph's Italian Restaurant, one of Philadelphia's oldest continuously operating Italian restaurants, which lends an unmistakable sense of history and authenticity to the series.
Nature also plays a surprisingly important role in Task. To capture its more isolated and suspenseful moments, the production traveled across Pennsylvania, filming at Marsh Creek State Park in Chester County, Sixpenny Creek Quarry inside French Creek State Park, Bangor Quarry, and Woy Bridge, each location adding a distinct visual texture to the show's increasingly tense investigation.
These locations do far more than provide attractive scenery. They reinforce the show's emotional and cultural identity, grounding every chase, confrontation, and family drama in places that feel genuinely lived-in rather than manufactured for television.
That authenticity has become one of the defining characteristics of Ingelsby's storytelling. Just as Mare of Easttown transformed southeastern Pennsylvania into a character of its own, Task uses the same philosophy to immerse viewers in a world where every street, diner, and park carries its own history, making the series feel less like a television production and more like a snapshot of real life.
Why has Task become one of HBO's biggest crime drama successes?
Mark Ruffalo's performance has been one of the series' biggest talking points, earning him even an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. His portrayal of Tom Brandis, a former priest navigating grief while leading an FBI task force, has been praised for balancing quiet vulnerability with unwavering determination. It is what seems to give the show the procedural and emotional weight that extends far beyond its central investigation.
Opposite him, Tom Pelphrey delivers one of the strongest performances of his career as Robbie Prendergrast, a garbage collector whose desperate attempts to provide for his family draw him into increasingly dangerous criminal territory. Rather than presenting Robbie as a conventional antagonist, the series allows audiences to understand the choices that push him toward crime. This performance also earned Pelphrey an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Emilia Jones, meanwhile, has emerged as the emotional heartbeat of the series through her portrayal of Maeve. Already widely recognized for her BAFTA-nominated performance in CODA, Jones brings remarkable maturity to a character caught between loyalty, survival, and hope, further reinforcing Ingelsby's talent for writing deeply human stories amid high-stakes crime.

Behind the camera, Task has received equal recognition. Brad Ingelsby earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for the episode A Still Small Voice. On the other hand, Salli Richardson-Whitfield received a nomination for Outstanding Directing, underscoring the creative team's ability to blend intimate character drama with gripping suspense, as per the Television Academy.
The critical and commercial response has reflected that quality. Task currently holds an impressive 96% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a 7.9/10 rating on IMDb, making it one of HBO's highest-rated new dramas in recent years.
Audiences embraced the series just as enthusiastically. The premiere attracted 3.1 million U.S. viewers within its first three days, while the finale climbed to 4 million cross-platform viewers over the same period. HBO also revealed that the premiere has now surpassed 11.2 million viewers, making Task one of the three fastest-growing freshman series in HBO history. During finale week, it also became the No. 1 title globally on Max, cementing its status as one of the network's biggest breakout successes of the year.
How is Task connected to Mare of Easttown?
For many viewers, Task already felt like a spiritual successor to Mare of Easttown. Both series were created by Brad Ingelsby, unfold in the working-class communities surrounding Philadelphia, and place emotionally flawed people at the center of compelling criminal investigations. Now, that connection is becoming official.
Ahead of Season 2, HBO confirmed that Julianne Nicholson will reprise her Emmy-winning role as Lori Ross from Mare of Easttown, establishing that both series exist within the same fictional universe. While HBO has yet to reveal exactly how Lori will become involved in Tom Brandis' next investigation, her return marks the first major crossover between Ingelsby's acclaimed Pennsylvania-set dramas.
The announcement has only heightened excitement surrounding Task's future, particularly given the extraordinary legacy of Mare of Easttown. Released in 2021, the Kate Winslet-led limited series became a cultural phenomenon, averaging 12.9 million viewers across its seven episodes while breaking HBO Max viewing records with its finale. It also earned 16 Primetime Emmy nominations, winning four, including acting honors for Kate Winslet, Evan Peters, and Julianne Nicholson.

The series remains one of HBO's highest-rated crime dramas, holding a 95% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.4/10 rating on IMDb. Like Task, it earned widespread praise for prioritizing character development over spectacle, proving that grounded. Winslet herself recently suggested that a second season of Mare of Easttown could eventually happen in a talk with Deadline. Which with Lori Ross now officially crossing over into Task, Brad Ingelsby appears to be building something television rarely attempts: a grounded, interconnected crime universe rooted in ordinary communities rather than extraordinary heroes.
If Mare of Easttown established Ingelsby as one of television's finest crime storytellers, Task proves that lightning can strike twice. By combining authentic Pennsylvania locations, unforgettable performances, and richly layered storytelling, the series has become far more than HBO's latest hit. Now, it may be the foundation for one of the most compelling shared universes currently taking shape on television.
