For the first time in The Legend of Vox Machina, the beloved adventuring party will begin a season apart, with each member heading down separate emotional and physical paths before eventually reuniting. Across three seasons, Prime Video’s hit animated fantasy series has rarely slowed down, throwing Vox Machina into one life-threatening battle after another. But with Season 4 acting as the beginning of the endgame and the penultimate chapter before the story’s conclusion, the creators appear to be taking a different approach.
And as bigger dangers begin closing in on Exandria, the separation may end up becoming exactly what the team needs before facing what lies ahead.
Why season 4 begins with Vox Machina apart?

Rather than immediately throwing the gang into another world-ending conflict, Season 4 will reportedly spend more time grounding itself in the emotional realities of where these characters currently stand. After years of chaos, heartbreak, and survival, Vox Machina’s members are now being forced to confront their regrets, hopes, personal goals, and fractured relationships before charging into one final battle together.
“Every season before this, the season has started with a group together — uh oh, big bad thing happens, go fight it...To prepare us for this final arc, the last chapter of the story, we wanted to bring it back to what people, I think, really care about in the show, which is these characters and their relationship to each other,” executive producer Sam Riegel told TV Insider.
Season 4 begins with Vox Machina scattered across Exandria. While Vex and Percy have settled into life in Whitestone, Vax and Keyleth continue Keyleth’s leadership journey, and Grog and Pike have gone off on adventures of their own. According to the creators, starting them separately allows every character space to reflect before eventually reconnecting for what may become their biggest challenge yet.
But fractured relationships are not the only major shift arriving in Season 4.
Why Taryon Darrington may arrive at the perfect time?
With Scanlan absent after stepping away to pursue a quieter life alongside his daughter Kaylie, the door suddenly opens for fan-favorite newcomer Taryon Darrington, a wealthy, overly confident adventurer voiced by Wayne Brady, who longtime Critical Role fans have been eagerly waiting to see.
“I’m really excited for the fans, new and old, to be annoyed with, and then fall in love with, Taryon Darrington, and get a glimpse of his backstory, where he came from… There’s also some characters coming up that will be familiar to our audience, but a shock when they are revealed,” Riegel told TV Insider.

Riegel, who originally created and played Taryon during the tabletop campaign, teased that the character’s arrival may initially frustrate viewers before eventually winning them over.
Still, fans expecting a lighter season may want to brace themselves. Speaking to Polygon, Riegel warned that Vox Machina is heading into “a darker, more epic place than ever before,” teasing emotional fallout, devastating stakes, and enough heartbreak to justify keeping tissues nearby — a direction that also reflects how Prime Video’s mature animated storytelling has increasingly resonated with audiences in recent years.
