Paramount has officially changed both the title of its upcoming HYBE-backed K-pop movie ahead of its release, to K-Pop: The Debut, set to release in February 2027, instead. While the film stars Eric Nam and Ji-young Yoo, K-pop continues cementing itself as one of the world’s biggest entertainment exports, with Hollywood having increasingly tried to figure out how to tap into its global obsession. But very few projects have attempted to blend the machinery of the Korean music industry with the scale of a major American studio film quite like this one.

With HYBE — the entertainment giant behind BTS, TXT, and Le Sserafim — stepping into movie production, expectations surrounding the project have quietly grown into something much bigger than a typical music drama. But before the film finally reaches audiences worldwide, Paramount has decided that a few major things need to change first.

Paramount has officially renamed the film from K-Pop Superstar: The Movie to K-Pop: The Debut and shifted its theatrical release from February 12, 2027, to February 26, 2027. The movie follows a young Korean-American woman who goes against her family’s wishes to compete in a televised competition to find the next K-pop girl group in South Korea. Ji-young Yoo and Eric Nam lead the cast alongside Yoo Ji-tae, Tony Revolori, Gia Kim, Kang Sora, and Sung Jun.

The title shift may also hint at a stronger focus on the high-pressure journey of becoming an idol, placing more emphasis on the brutal and emotional road toward finally making a debut, something deeply tied to K-pop culture itself.  It is also worth noting that the changed release dates now place the Benson Lee-directed film in the midst of a more competitive weekend, sandwiched between Warner Bros.’ Panic Carefully, starring Julia Roberts and Eddie Redmayne, along with Sony’s family drama Live Like That.

But the bigger story here may not be the title change at all. Beneath the surface, Paramount and HYBE’s upcoming film is quietly shaping up to become one of Hollywood’s boldest bets yet on K-pop culture.

Beyond its title and release date change, Paramount and HYBE’s upcoming film could quietly become one of Hollywood’s biggest experiments in bringing K-pop culture to the mainstream. The project is expected to be the first major American studio movie filmed entirely in South Korea and to mark HYBE Corporation’s first feature film production. The timing may also work in the film’s favor. Ji-young Yoo arrives fresh off the success of K-pop Demon Hunters, whose breakout popularity and eventual Oscar wins for Best Animated Feature and Best Song proved there is a growing global appetite for stories rooted in K-pop culture.

“This film is my love letter to K-pop — its energy, passion, magic, and the incredible community behind it, I’m deeply grateful to Paramount Pictures for championing the project, to our producers for their unwavering dedication, to our talented and dynamic cast, and to the legends of the genre helping us bring this story to life. This one’s for the dreamers,” director Benson Lee previously said in a statement about the project, as reported by Variety.

If Hollywood has spent years trying to understand the global force of K-pop, K-Pop: The Debut may finally become one of its biggest attempts yet to capture that phenomenon on the big screen, a challenge that suddenly looks far more achievable after the breakout success of K-Pop Demon Hunters.
