Fifteen years after Insidious first terrified audiences with its haunting vision of The Further, the supernatural horror franchise is set to return with its sixth installment, Insidious: Out of the Further. Directed by Come Play filmmaker Jacob Chase, the upcoming sequel introduces a brand-new story while continuing the mythology that has remained at the heart of the series since James Wan and Leigh Whannell launched it more than a decade ago.

This latest chapter follows Gemma, a young mother who discovers she possesses an extraordinary connection to The Further. But what initially appears to be a mysterious gift soon turns into a terrifying curse as she realizes she can bring the realm's sinister entities back into the real world, putting both herself and her daughter in unimaginable danger.

Helping bring that nightmare to life is an ensemble that blends returning franchise icons with fresh faces from acclaimed horror films, superhero series, prestige television, and blockbuster franchises. Here's a closer look at the cast of Insidious: Out of the Further and where you may have seen them before.

Meet the cast of Insidious: Out of the Further

Amelia Eve as Gemma: Amelia Eve leads Insidious: Out of the Further as Gemma, a young mother whose mysterious connection to The Further becomes the film's central conflict. Forced to confront supernatural forces while protecting her daughter, Gemma finds herself at the heart of one of the franchise's most dangerous paranormal mysteries yet.

Horror fans may already recognize Eve from Mike Flanagan's acclaimed Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor, where she portrayed Jamie Taylor. She also starred in Leopard Skin, further establishing herself in suspense-driven stories. With Out of the Further, Eve takes on her biggest horror leading role to date.

Brandon Perea: Brandon Perea joins the ensemble after building an impressive résumé across both film and television. Although best known to many audiences for his breakout performance in Jordan Peele's sci-fi thriller Nope, Perea has continued to expand his profile with appearances in Twisters, Poker Face, and Netflix's cult favorite The OA.

His experience balancing suspense, action, and emotionally grounded performances makes him a natural addition to the Insidious universe, which often relies as much on character-driven storytelling as supernatural scares.

Maisie Richardson-Sellers: Maisie Richardson-Sellers brings one of the most diverse careers in the cast. Superhero fans know her best as Amaya Jiwe and Charlie in DC's Legends of Tomorrow, while viewers of The Originals will remember her dual portrayal of Eva Sinclair and Rebekah Mikaelson.

Beyond television, Richardson-Sellers also appeared in The Kissing Booth 2 and The Kissing Booth 3, while eagle-eyed Star Wars fans may recognize her as Korr Sella from Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Her background across fantasy, romance, and science fiction adds another experienced genre performer to the film's ensemble.

Sam Spruell: British actor Sam Spruell is another familiar face joining the franchise. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for playing intense, memorable characters across both film and television.

Audiences may recognize him from Fargo Season 5, while his film credits include Legend, Snow White and the Huntsman, and The Counselor. His commanding screen presence has made him a dependable supporting performer across crime dramas, action films, and psychological thrillers.

Laura Gordon: Laura Gordon has quietly become a recognizable face within the horror genre over the years. She earned widespread praise for portraying June Ross-Mitchell in the critically acclaimed supernatural horror film Late Night with the Devil, one of the genre's standout releases in recent years.

Genre fans may also remember Gordon from Saw V and the Australian thriller Undertow. Her growing body of horror work makes Insidious: Out of the Further another natural addition to her filmography.

Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier: No Insidious film would feel complete without Lin Shaye's Elise Rainier. The veteran actress remains the franchise's spiritual heart and is the only performer to appear in every installment of the series.

Long before becoming synonymous with Insidious, Shaye built a remarkable career across film, television, and theater, studying under legendary acting teachers including Uta Hagen, Stella Adler, and Lee Strasberg before establishing herself as one of Hollywood's most respected character actors. As the gifted psychic who understands The Further better than anyone else, Elise once again serves as the bridge between the living world and the terrifying realm beyond.

What is Insidious: Out of the Further about?

Unlike previous entries that largely revolved around the Lambert family, Insidious: Out of the Further shifts its focus to an entirely new protagonist. The story follows Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter, Maya, in the home where she grew up. As disturbing dreams and increasingly vivid visions begin to haunt her, Gemma discovers she possesses a rare ability unlike anything explored in the franchise before—she can enter The Further and bring whatever lives there back into the real world.

That extraordinary power quickly turns into a terrifying burden. As malevolent entities realize Gemma can unknowingly create a bridge between their realm and the world of the living, she finds herself in a desperate race to protect her daughter from the horrors she has unleashed. With the supernatural threat escalating, Gemma turns to the one person who understands The Further better than anyone else: Elise Rainier. Lin Shaye's return once again positions the beloved psychic as the franchise's guiding force, helping a new family confront dangers beyond human comprehension.

While the film introduces fresh characters, it continues expanding one of Insidious' most distinctive ideas—The Further itself. First introduced in the 2010 original, the eerie limbo-like dimension has remained central to the franchise's mythology, serving as the home of countless restless spirits and demonic entities. Out of the Further promises to explore that world in greater depth by introducing a protagonist whose connection to it goes far beyond astral projection, raising the stakes in ways previous installments have only hinted at. Here's everything to know about when the film arrives in theaters and where it fits within the Insidious timeline.

When does Insidious: Out of the Further release and where does it fit in the franchise?

Insidious: Out of the Further arrives in theaters on August 21 with a runtime of 106 minutes. The Motion Picture Association has awarded the film a PG-13 rating for "strong violent content, bloody images, terror and some strong language," keeping it in line with every previous installment in the franchise.

Behind the camera, Come Play director Jacob Chase takes over directing duties, while franchise creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell remain closely involved with the series they launched more than 15 years ago. Wan joins Jason Blum and Oren Peli as producers, continuing the long-running collaboration between Blumhouse and Atomic Monster that has helped shape modern horror.

Chronologically, Insidious: Out of the Further serves as a direct sequel to 2023's Insidious: The Red Door, making it the latest chapter in the franchise's ongoing timeline. Although the film introduces a brand-new family and story, Elise Rainier's return provides an important connection to the events of the earlier films, meaning longtime fans will find familiar mythology alongside an entirely fresh supernatural mystery. By combining new characters with one of horror's most recognizable paranormal worlds, Insidious: Out of the Further looks to expand the franchise while remaining firmly rooted in the legacy that has kept audiences returning to The Further for more than a decade.
