Release date, cast and Netflix details for the Prince Charles documentary
The documentary, currently titled The King, His Trust and Me (working title), is officially scheduled to release on Netflix in Fall 2026. Announced in June 2025, the project is currently in production and will focus on The King’s Trust, the youth-focused charity founded by King Charles III in 1976, formerly known as The Prince’s Trust.
While the project does not feature a traditional scripted “cast,” the documentary will prominently involve Sir Idris Elba, who previously received financial support from The King’s Trust as a young actor. Elba’s production company, 22 Summers, which he co-founded with Diene Petterle, is producing the documentary. BAFTA-winning filmmaker Ashley Francis-Roy, known for To Catch a Copper, is attached as director, while Clare Bradbury serves as showrunner.
The documentary has already started generating a significant amount of attention online due to both the involvement of King Charles III and Idris Elba’s personal connection to the story. Royal documentaries and monarchy-focused projects have consistently performed strongly on streaming platforms in recent years, particularly among audiences interested in behind-the-scenes royal stories and real-life institutional narratives.
Beyond the release details, viewers are equally curious about what chapter of King Charles III’s legacy the documentary plans to explore.
What the Prince Charles Netflix documentary will focus on?
At the center of the documentary is The King’s Trust, the UK-based charity founded by King Charles III nearly five decades ago to support vulnerable young people between the ages of 11 and 30. The project will explore the organization’s long-term impact across areas such as education, unemployment, homelessness, disabilities, and youth opportunity programs. Idris Elba’s own journey is expected to play a major role in the documentary, with the actor previously crediting a £1,500 grant from the Trust for helping launch his acting career.
“The King’s Trust gave me an opportunity that changed my life...At a time when I didn’t have the resources to pursue my ambitions, they offered real, practical support.” Idris Elba said while discussing the project. The documentary arrives during an important transition period for the monarchy, with public attention around King Charles III continuing to remain high following recent royal-family projects and ongoing fascination after The Crown.

Other notable recipients connected to The King’s Trust include David Oyelowo, Dynamo, Naughty Boy, and the rock band Muse, further highlighting the organization’s broad cultural reach over the decades.
With Netflix continuing to invest heavily in royal-family and prestige documentary storytelling, The King, His Trust is already shaping up to become another high-profile addition to the platform’s expanding catalogue of monarchy-related content ahead of its Fall 2026 release.
