Here's a breakdown of what happened in the final episode and the truth behind Matthew's disappearance.
What really happened to Matthew in I Will Find You?
For most of the series, suspicion falls on several different figures, including mob boss Nicky Fisher, disgraced medical professionals, and individuals connected to David's wrongful conviction. Each new revelation appears to point toward a larger criminal conspiracy. The finale ultimately reveals that Matthew was never taken because of David.
Instead, the kidnapping traces back to Hayden Payne, the wealthy philanthropist who had seemingly been helping David and Rachel search for answers all along. The twist re-contextualizes much of the series, transforming a story that initially appeared to be about organized crime into one rooted in obsession and personal delusion.
Years earlier, Hayden developed an unhealthy fixation on Rachel after their relationship ended. A long-buried detail from before Matthew's birth ultimately fueled Hayden's delusion, convincing him that the child belonged to a life he imagined for himself and Rachel. Operating under that false assumption, he convinced himself that the boy should belong to him.
Rather than simply kidnapping Matthew, Hayden orchestrated an elaborate cover-up. He staged the child's death, framed David for m**der, and raised Matthew under the name Theo. To maintain the illusion, he went to horrifying lengths, including substituting another child's body and manipulating evidence to ensure David would be convicted.
The truth becomes even darker when Gertrude Payne reveals that she secretly knew Hayden was never Matthew's father. Despite discovering the truth years earlier through a DNA test, she allowed her son to continue living under the delusion in order to protect the Payne family's reputation. That decision ultimately helped sustain the lie at the center of the series for years.
The biggest surprise in I Will Find You is not that Hayden Payne is responsible for Matthew's disappearance. It is that his motive has almost nothing to do with the conspiracy that the series spends most of its runtime building. By the time the finale reveals the truth, viewers realize they have been looking in the wrong direction all along.
Why Hayden's motive changes the entire story?
The reveal works because it completely shifts the audience's understanding of the mystery. Throughout the season, viewers are encouraged to believe that Matthew's disappearance is connected to criminal networks, corruption, and revenge plots. Nicky Fisher becomes a particularly convincing suspect as more information about his history with David's family comes to light.
By the finale, however, the series reveals that Matthew's disappearance was never primarily about David. Instead, it stemmed from Hayden's inability to let go of Rachel and his distorted belief that Matthew represented a life he should have had. That distinction is important because it transforms Hayden from a traditional villain into something far more unsettling. He is not motivated by money, power, or revenge. His actions are driven by obsession disguised as love. In his own mind, he believes he is protecting a family that never truly belonged to him.
The series plants subtle clues throughout its run to support this reveal. Hayden repeatedly positions himself as Rachel's most dependable ally and remains unusually invested in the search for Matthew. What initially appears to be loyalty eventually takes on a far more troubling meaning once the truth is exposed.
The revelation also explains why so many leads seemed disconnected from one another. While mobsters, corrupt officials and hidden secrets all play a role in the broader story, none of them are responsible for Matthew's disappearance. The real answer was hiding in plain sight through one of the characters viewers were encouraged to trust.

Solving the mystery was only half the battle. Once the truth finally comes to light, I Will Find You shifts its focus from uncovering what happened to Matthew to exploring whether the people devastated by his disappearance can truly move forward.
What I Will Find You's ending means for David and Matthew
Once Hayden's deception is uncovered, the series quickly moves toward resolution. With Agent Sarah Greer's help, David reaches the Payne estate and finally reunites with Matthew. The confrontation ends in tragedy, with Hayden killed during a shootout and David seriously wounded while trying to save his son. Fortunately for David, the story does not end there.
The finale jumps forward several months and reveals that he survived his injuries. More importantly, his conviction has been overturned, finally restoring the freedom he lost after being wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he never committed. Matthew is reunited with his family, and the healing process can finally begin.
The ending also offers closure for several supporting characters. Rachel publishes a book documenting the case, while Cheryl begins rebuilding her life after years of grief and uncertainty. Although the scars left behind by the ordeal remain, the characters are no longer trapped by the lies that defined their lives for so long.

Ultimately, I Will Find You is less concerned with whether this family can recover than with their willingness to try. The title itself serves as a promise that defines David throughout the series. No matter the obstacles, the betrayals, or the years lost, he refuses to stop searching for his son. By the final scene, Matthew has finally been found. The mystery is solved, David has reclaimed his future, and the family is given something that seemed impossible for much of the series: a second chance.
As for a second season, I Will Find You appears to have delivered a largely self-contained story. The finale resolves the central mystery surrounding Matthew's disappearance, identifies those responsible, and provides closure for the major characters. While Netflix has not announced any continuation plans, the series concludes in a way that feels more like a complete chapter than the beginning of another mystery.
