Murder, mayhem, and monsters never rest, but neither do Netflix's adaptations of the most blood-curdling lore cherry-picked from the real crime world. Following the success of the butcher and body snatcher's dramatic crime story, the streaming titan has now set its seasoned eyes upon a mistress of axe murders, whose saga even infiltrated local folk rhymes, let alone American pop culture. Fresh off the trove, Netflix has dropped official updates on Monster Season 4, right when Ed Gein's narrative called the curtain. 

Monster has already solidified its reputation as a true crime hybrid, and now it focuses its lens on one of America's most infamous murder trials, with a female monster at large on the screens.

Netflix's fourth installment of Monster will travel to 1892, focusing on Lizzie Borden, the first female-led season of the anthology, starring Ella Beatty as Lizzie Borden, and Charlie Hunnam returning to play Andrew Borden, her dad. Rebecca Hall will reportedly take on the role of her stepmother, Abby Borden, and Vicky Krieps will star as Bridget Sullivan, the family maid. Billie Lourd plays Borden's sister Emma Borden, and Jessica Barden plays Nance O'Neill, a stage performer and confidant.

The announcement comes officially as production of Ryan Murphy's true crime series has started in fall 2025, with at least one episode of Monster 4 up for direction under Barden's husband, Max Winkler, who helmed the last season. A 2026 release for the Lizzie Borden season might be possible, considering Netflix's yearly pattern of release since 2022's first installment, followed by the 3rd season in 2025. It will dramatize the famous 1892 double homicide for which Lizzie Borden was tried and subsequently acquitted. Keeping up with its pledge, the series is set to delve not only into the crime but into the cultural, gendered, and psychological aspects of the monster.

However, with its fourth season, the show has geared up to tackle the woman who is cited in Fall River area's skipping rhymes to inspire fear. Lizzie Borden (1860–1927), a lasting mystery in American crime mythology, was accused and tried for deleting her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892, by repeated axe blows.

However, unlike other Monster protagonists, Borden was acquitted in 1893, but suspicion remained. The case was sensationalized in its time, creating folklore, ballads, media attention, and constant speculation. Through the decades, Lizzie Borden became a cultural cipher waltzing with villain, victim, or somewhere in between. And Monster Season 4 now aims to look into that shadow.
