“It’s a dirty word”: ‘Rick and Morty’ Creators Reveal The Initial Responses for Their Genre-Bending Animated Show

In a couple of months, we’ll be entering into another season of the Adult Swim animated series, Rick and Morty. It’s going to be another whirlwind of intergalactic adventures with such an iconic duo. Besides, the season finale was mind-blowing. As enthralling as it was, it would have been nothing without the world’s best producers. In a flurry of interviews, Justin Roiland, the co-creator of Rick and Morty, spilled the beans over the show’s initial days. 

Every successful man has had his share of struggles and hardships, and so did Roiland. The director/producer reportedly talked about how the worldwide famous show was actually a difficult bid to sell early on. Here’s more about it.

Rick and Morty co-creator Roiland recalls the show’s initial hardships

Being a victim of poor timing, the show wasn’t as appealing to the public as it is now. It is already difficult for a show to maintain itself upto to the sixth installment with a fanbase so large. But unlike today’s sensational popularity, the creators had a “hard time” getting a sci-fi concept through the gate. “Back then sci-fi wasn’t profitable; it wasn’t doing really well. Executives saw sci-fi and were like, eh, that’s a dirty word,” shared Roiland.

That for sure was the climate at that time. However, after much struggle with increasing the reach, they finally managed to make it a hit. Roiland decided to “make the show,” and here they are with the largest fan base ever for any sci-fi animated series. Nevertheless, it doesn’t come as a surprise knowing that the show creators had a tough time with it.
