Stranger Things: The First Shadow will officially close in London's West End and Broadway bringing Netflix's ambitious theatrical expansion of the franchise to an end more than a year after the television series concluded. The stage play arrived with considerable anticipation when it debuted as a prequel exploring the origins of Henry Creel, the troubled young boy who would eventually become Vecna. Given its direct connection to one of the franchise's most important villains, many fans initially wondered whether the production would become essential viewing ahead of the Netflix show's final season.
That concern ultimately proved unnecessary. While The First Shadow expanded the mythology of Hawkins and provided additional context for Vecna's backstory, the Upside Down is finally lowering its curtain

On Tuesday, the show's producers have announced how Stranger Things: The First Shadow will have its final run at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End on December 27, 2026, and at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway on January 3, 2027. Despite a mixed critical reception, the production will have run for over three years in London and for a little more than a year and a half on Broadway.
When The First Shadow first opened, one of the biggest questions surrounding the production was how closely it would connect to the future of the Netflix series. The play was marketed as an origin story for Henry Creel and contained revelations about characters and events that would later become relevant to the franchise's overarching narrative.
As anticipation for Season 5 grew, some fans worried that important plot details would be locked behind a Broadway or West End ticket. However, the Duffer Brothers later emphasized that they did not want audiences who had not seen the production to feel excluded from the final season's story.
That approach ensured that Season 5 remained accessible to the show's global audience rather than only those who had access to live theater. While the play offered additional context and deeper character exploration, it ultimately functioned as a companion piece rather than a required chapter of the franchise.
As a result, The First Shadow occupies an unusual place within the larger Stranger Things universe. It expanded the mythology and rewarded dedicated fans, but it never became necessary homework for understanding the series' conclusion.
Yet that does not mean the production failed to leave a lasting mark on Netflix's biggest franchise.
What The First Shadow accomplished beyond the Netflix series?
The production represented Netflix's most ambitious theatrical venture to date and served as a test of whether Stranger Things could successfully expand beyond streaming. By Netflix's own figures, the play sold nearly 1.6 million tickets across its West End and Broadway runs while delivering more than 1,500 performances.
The production also earned significant industry recognition. Its elaborate visual effects, illusions, sound design, and staging helped it secure multiple Tony Awards, further cementing its reputation as one of the most technically ambitious stage productions of recent years.

Netflix executives have described the project as an unprecedented collaboration between television and theater, while the Duffer Brothers praised the creative team for creating an experience unlike anything else in the franchise. Perhaps most notably, they revealed that many audience members attending the play had never previously been to a Broadway show.
Although The First Shadow may no longer carry major implications for the Stranger Things storyline itself, its broader impact is harder to dismiss. The play demonstrated that the franchise could thrive outside of television and helped introduce thousands of fans to live theater in the process. As discussions continue around the franchise's future, the production remains one of Netflix's most ambitious attempts to expand the world beyond the original series.
