When it comes to producing high-quality content, streaming giants like Netflix never back down. If the script is right and has the potential to be a mass entertainer, then it might even go carte blanche on the funds. Over the years, Netflix has produced several big-budget movies, and some of them even became the costliest movies ever made.

Though there is no certain way to determine the success of movies released directly to OTT, other than the number of streaming hours, most of the movies in the list have managed to amass the desired number of hours.  

Netflix always tries to surprise its audience and, in the process, has made some of the most expensive films on the platform.

The Midnight Sky, based on the book Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton, tells the tale of an elderly scientist named Augustine Lofthouse (George Clooney) in a post-apocalyptic world trying to prevent a spaceship from landing on Earth after a disaster makes the planet uninhabitable. The movie, which also starred Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone, and Demián Bichir in important roles, was an aesthetically marvelous film.

The frames and cinematography of the movie really justified its enormous budget of $100 Million, and even earned it a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 93rd Academy Awards.

The world of Bright is one in which humans and otherworldly beings try to live in harmony. Will Smith plays Daryl Ward, a police officer who teams up with an Orc officer (Joel Edgerton), and through their dynamic, the story tries to create parallels with racism and xenophobia. Bright was an ambitious project for the streamer, but it took things too far in its own imagination. The movie received a lot of attention, partly because of its enormous budget of approximately $106 million and divisive reviews.

This action-adventure flick, which starred Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund in pivotal roles, was sure to be expensive, with the budget reaching almost $115 Million. The film centers on five former Special Forces troops who get together to pull off the heist of a lifetime. Well, things do not go exactly as they planned, and they face many challenges and betrayals in the process.

Triple Frontier became a sleeper hit mostly because of its compelling plot and the cast's smooth teamwork, and the stunning locations undoubtedly contributed to the film's powerful mood.

A historical drama standing on a massive budget of $120 Million, tells the story of Robert the Bruce, a Scottish leader played by Chris Pine, who opposes English rule in the fourteenth century. Bruce fights to liberate Scotland from English rule after being declared an outlaw. In addition to dealing with political ploys, he encounters many disputes, betrayals, and challenges to bring Scottish clans together.

Despite having a solid cast that includes Florence Pugh and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in addition to Pine, Outlaw King hasn't had much of an impact over the long run.

The action-packed comedy movie 6 Underground, starring Ryan Reynolds, centers on a group of six vigilantes commanded by a billionaire who staged his death in order to combat international crime. The group dismantles criminal groups by carrying out risky missions. Netflix invested an exorbitant $150 Million on this movie despite the somewhat ridiculous premise.

The ensemble of 6 Underground, which includes Dave Franco, Adria Arjona, and Mélanie Laurent, does a good job in anchoring the outlandish script.

The fourth movie in the Beverly Hills Cop series, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, was released directly on Netflix. Eddie Murphy plays the title character in the action comedy, a police officer who returns to Beverly Hills after discovering that his daughter is in danger. Since the last movie of the franchise came way back in 1994, Murphy’s return as the beloved cop generated a lot of buzz and led Netflix to invest a hefty $150 Million in the film.

Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, all in one movie, directed by Martin Scorsese - an epic experience. These guys are not just veterans but the flagbearers of crime dramas, giving an array of masterpieces over the years. Netflix was bound to throw $160 Million for such a project, as movies like these come only once every blue moon.

The epic gangster saga follows hitman Frank Sheeran (De Niro) as he narrates the story of his life and connection with the mob across a number of decades. As is the case with several Scorsese films, The Irishman was also nominated for multiple Oscars at the 92nd Academy Awards.

When there are bigwigs like Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot headlining a project, there is no way that the budget remains grounded. This was the most anticipated movie of the year 2021, just because of the names involved and an enormous $200 Million budget.

Red Notice combines comedy and action while making fun of both the genre's clichés. The film travels the world and does a better job of justifying its budget than some of Netflix's other productions, thanks to its massive set pieces and fast-paced action scenes.

The Gray Man, an action thriller starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, was the only thing anybody could talk about upon its release. Netflix opted to invest $200 million in the project with two of Hollywood's biggest stars on board. The film, which was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, centers on the tussle between CIA agent Sierra Six (Gosling) and Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former agent. Critics gave The Gray Man mixed reviews despite its enormous budget.

Boasting a bloated budget of $356 Million, the movie, directed by the Russo Brothers and starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, is Netflix's most recent and most costly original film. The movie did not get great reviews and despite its stupendous budget, failed to impress viewers.

The Electric State became one of the most expensive Netflix movies because of so many well-known actors like Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, and Anthony Mackie involved, intricate visual effects, and a heavy reliance on computer-generated imagery.
