Netflix reclaimed the top spot on Nielsen's streaming rankings thanks to the strong performance of Nemesis and The Boroughs., but the latest data also offered a revealing look at the contrasting fortunes of both the shows.
Weekly streaming charts often tell a more complete story than opening-week headlines. While premieres can generate curiosity, sustained viewership is usually what determines whether a series develops staying power or struggles to maintain momentum.
That dynamic was on full display in Nielsen's latest rankings, which highlighted two Netflix originals whose audience trajectories appear to be moving in very different directions.

Netflix's Nielsen victory reveals two very different audience stories
Nemesis topped Nielsen's overall streaming rankings during the week of May 18, generating 1.3 billion viewing minutes. In the process, it delivered Netflix its first scripted chart-topper since Beauty in Black in March, while helping the streamer secure each of the top three positions overall.
On the other hand, Duffer Brothers' The Boroughs occupied the second spot with 1.2 billion viewing minutes on the list. For The Boroughs, the chart placement offered both encouragement and caution.
According to Nielsen's latest rankings, a total of five Netflix shows have occupied spots apart from Nemesis and The Boroughs: The Crash, with 1.1 million viewing minutes at spot 3, GOAT with 839 million viewing minutes at spot 6, and Grey's Anatomy with 749 million viewing minutes at spot 8.
Reaching the upper tier of Nielsen's rankings demonstrated that The Boroughs initially attracted curiosity from viewers, but a broader comparison showed that it was unable to generate the same level of momentum as Nemesis, which continued to expand its audience after launch.
Why do these numbers mean very different futures for both shows?
The most interesting takeaway from Nielsen's report may not be who finished first, but what the numbers suggest about the future of each series.
In the case of Nemesis, the strong performance adds to growing optimism surrounding a potential second season. Netflix has not officially renewed the series, but creator Courtney A. Kemp and co-creator Tani Marole have already discussed plans for where the story could go next. The show's continued presence near the top of Netflix's rankings suggests it has found an audience willing to stick around beyond launch week.

According to Deadline's exclusive report, Netflix recently opted not to move forward with a second season of The Boroughs after the sci-fi drama struggled to maintain momentum following its debut. Despite positive reviews, an acclaimed ensemble cast and the involvement of the creators behind Stranger Things, the series ultimately failed to deliver the sustained audience growth that often drives Netflix's renewal decisions, with its performance falling short of comparable titles like Obliterated and The Waterfront.
Viewed together, the two series serve as a reminder of how streaming success is measured today. Launch buzz may bring viewers through the door, but long-term growth remains the metric that matters most. Nielsen's latest rankings simply made that reality impossible to ignore.
