The modern streaming era, however, constantly offers opportunities for established talents to completely shatter those expectations. Now, one of the most recognizable television actors, Milo Ventimiglia, has taken a shockingly dark turn in a brand-new thriller, weaponizing his pristine reputation to pull off a massive narrative twist.

The latest Harlan Coben adaptation to hit Netflix, I Will Find You, has audiences completely on edge. While the twisty thriller boasts an incredible ensemble cast including Sam Worthington and Britt Lower, it is Milo Ventimiglia’s deeply unsettling villain arc as wealthy ex-boyfriend Hayden Payne that has everyone talking.
“I don't know if people are going to see it coming from America's Dad previously, from [This Is Us] Jack Pearson,” Ventimiglia explained regarding his massive creative pivot, speaking to PEOPLE.
This fascinating behind-the-scenes insight was originally reported in an exclusive interview for PEOPLE. The publication detailed how Ventimiglia and the creative team utilized a bit of casting trickery to subvert expectations, knowing viewers would never anticipate such a dark, violent trajectory from a classically good guy.
Stepping away from his famously comforting television presence, the actor leans into a shockingly violent role that relies entirely on his history of playing incredibly dependable men.
By using his wholesome reputation as a form of misdirection, Ventimiglia helps deliver one of the series' most unsettling surprises. What viewers may not realize, however, is that the demanding role arrived during an extraordinarily turbulent chapter away from the cameras.
Behind the Dark Turn: Loss, Fatherhood and a Demanding Role
Taking on such a heavy, emotionally taxing role required a massive psychological shift, but the real-world logistics behind Milo Ventimiglia's performance were just as demanding. The actor was in conversations for the villainous part just weeks after he and his wife, Jarah Marino, tragically lost their Malibu home in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. At the exact same time, the couple had just become first-time parents and were rapidly relocating to Nashville for another production.
With only a two-week gap between wrapping his Nashville project and stepping onto the Toronto set of the Netflix thriller, the actor barely had time to unpack. Despite the chaotic personal upheaval of losing a home and navigating new fatherhood, he fully surrendered to the grim reality of his character. He admitted to People that letting his imagination go to a place as wild, dark, and wrong as possible was actually the fun part of the demanding process.

In the show's intense finale, his character meets a delicate and heartbreaking end after wrongly believing he had abducted his biological son. Ventimiglia shared that he ultimately wanted the audience to feel sympathetic for Hayden's twisted but genuine love for the child, hoping viewers would experience a conflicting mix of wanting the sick villain gone while still understanding his profound pain.
