Chris Brancato has delivered the clearest update yet on the future of Netflix's Narcos franchise, revealing that he considers the acclaimed crime saga's story to be finished. The co-creator made the remarks while discussing his upcoming MGM+ crime drama, The Westies, which premieres on July 12.
For years, Narcos fans have continued to wonder whether Netflix would eventually return to the world of drug cartels after Narcos: Mexico concluded in 2021. Every new crime project from Brancato reignited those hopes, with many believing there was still another chapter waiting to be told.
That possibility now appears slimmer than ever. While reflecting on his past work and looking ahead to his next series, Brancato finally addressed the future of Narcos—and his answer isn't the one longtime fans were hoping to hear.

Why does Chris Brancato believe Narcos has reached its end?
Speaking to Deadline while promoting The Westies, Chris Brancato explained that, from his perspective, the Narcos story has already run its course. Having overseen the Pablo Escobar storyline that launched the franchise in 2015, he believes that chapter has been fully explored.
"I specifically attended to the Pablo Escobar portion of Narcos and that story is told, as far as I'm concerned," Brancato told Deadline, explaining why he believes the franchise has reached its natural conclusion.
While talking to Deadline, Brancato shared that he does not believe he is leaving the world of crime dramas behind. Instead, he sees many of his later projects as creative successors to Narcos, suggesting the storytelling style that made the Netflix series so successful continues to influence his work today.
"After we populate Mars, maybe there will be a Narcos: Mars," his longtime collaborator Michael Panes offered a more lighthearted response when asked whether another installment could ever happen. Joking that viewers might have to wait until humanity colonizes another planet.
While Brancato may have closed the door on another Narcos chapter, he made it clear that he is not done telling crime stories. In fact, his next project may already carry the same DNA that made Netflix's cartel saga such a massive success.
How is Chris Brancato carrying Narcos' legacy into his next crime drama?
Although Chris Brancato may consider Narcos complete, he is not leaving the crime genre behind. His next series, The Westies, follows a fictionalized version of New York City's notorious Irish-American gang during the early 1980s, exploring the group's violent clashes with rival crime families and the changing face of the city.
Brancato has already expressed confidence that The Westies has the potential to grow beyond a single season, revealing that he and Panes have mapped out a much larger story and are already discussing future projects as part of his ongoing relationship with MGM+. That long-term vision echoes the expansive storytelling approach that helped make Narcos one of Netflix's defining original dramas.

The iconic series, which premiered in 2015, Narcos evolved from Pablo Escobar's rise and fall into a broader franchise with Narcos: Mexico, earning widespread acclaim, multiple Emmy nominations and a lasting reputation as one of streaming's most influential crime series. Even if another installment never materializes, its impact continues to shape both the genre and Brancato's creative direction.
For fans still hoping to revisit the world of Narcos, Brancato's latest comments may bring disappointment. But if his own words are any indication, the spirit of the franchise will continue to live on through the crime stories he's choosing to tell next.
