Oliver Tree spent much of his career defying expectations. Through a combination of music, visual storytelling, and an unmistakable public persona, he built a following that extended far beyond traditional genre boundaries. That unconventional approach helped turn him into one of the internet era's most recognizable artists, with millions of fans following every new release, creative stunt and career move. Even after years in the spotlight, Tree remained an artist who consistently did things on his own terms.
With such unfortunate and sad renewed attention surrounding the artist and his career, many have revisited one of the most talked-about developments from his final months: his highly public split from Atlantic Records after nearly a decade with the label.

Just months before reports emerged that Oliver Tree had died in a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, the singer-songwriter was publicly battling Atlantic Records over the fate of his latest album. What began as a dispute over support for 'Love You Madly, Hate You Badly' ultimately led to the end of a partnership that had lasted nearly a decade.
"After making tens of millions of dollars over 8 years for Atlantic Records, they no longer want to support my art because I'm not making songs for TikTok...I never got into this to make TikTok songs." Tree said in an Instagram update. In April, Tree announced that he would be parting ways with Atlantic Records, claiming the label was no longer supporting the project.
The artist also alleged that internal issues had affected the release of multiple songs and criticized what he described as a lack of marketing support. According to Tree, the situation became especially frustrating after spending more than two years creating the album while traveling extensively around the world.
Despite the dispute, negotiations between Tree's team and the label eventually resulted in a compromise in the form of Tree's own label, Alien Boy Records. With the album released, Oliver Tree made sure he would be booked after leaving Atlantic Records.
What happened after Oliver Tree's departure from Atlantic Records?
Following the album's release, Oliver Tree immediately shifted his focus towards promoting the project through an ambitious international tour. The run was scheduled to include more than 70 shows across 30 countries and all seven continents. The artist had recently performed in South America and was sharing updates from Brazil when tragedy struck.
According to reports from CNN Brazil, Tree was among six people killed after two helicopters collided over Rio de Janeiro on June 14. Authorities in Brazil have since launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. The crash reportedly involved two helicopters that collided mid-air before falling into the city's western zone.

In hindsight, Tree's final months were marked by a determination to protect and release music he had spent years creating. While the dispute with Atlantic Records became one of the biggest stories of his final chapter, the eventual release of 'Love You Madly, Hate You Badly' ensured that the project reached audiences before his reported death. The situation also echoed another high-profile split between an artist and a longtime label that recently made headlines in the music industry.
