In the mid-2000s, Kanye West and Usher were both entering their most legendary eras with Grammy-winning hits like the former’s ‘Gold Digger’ and the latter’s ‘Yeah!’. With lyrics as daring as their personalities, both artist’s music would rarely be absent from the Billboard charts. While Ye was using his rap skills to diss his slowly growing list of nemeses, Usher was mostly pumping out melodious R&B dance hits.

Even in their separate genres, something brought the two names together. This was because Ye had dragged the 8-time Grammy winner’s name into a shady ‘Gold Digger’ lyric about someone.

How did Usher react to Kanye West referencing him?

In an interview with Nova 100 via Daily Mail, Usher was asked about the fact that West mentioned him in ‘Gold Digger’. The line about somebody who used to “f**k with Usher” was among the more coarse ones from the song. However, the 44-year-old felt that the ‘Donda’ rapper had not said it in a “derogatory” sense. So, he “didn’t mind” him doing so. Especially because he was “single” and “legal” too.

In a way, it was not surprising that the ‘Superstar’ singer did not take offense to something Ye said about him. After all, the previous year he had said how he recognised Ye’s talent and hence brought him along on tour. Today, almost two decades later, the 46-year-old’s talents are among the most recognized in the rap game and so is Usher’s.

Just yesterday, Usher was announced as the Super Bowl Halftime Show artist for the next season. One of the first to break this news was none other than West’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian. After all, The Kardashians star is known to enjoy his music, as proven by her groove session earlier this year. In 2011, the 44-year-old also made a guest appearance at the half-time show in Texas.

So, he is no stranger to pleasing the massive crowds that show up for it. As not just a veteran but also a maestro of the R&B game, this honor was much deserved by Usher. There is surely no shortage of people who spent the 2000s grooving to his music. After Rihanna’s mind-blowing performance last year, Usher is just the kind of artist that Super Bowl needs to continue its unparalleled legacy of phenomenal Halftime shows.
