Few acts get a second chapter in entertainment. Fewer still remain relevant long enough to witness entire generations of artists follow in their footsteps. Yet four decades after first emerging on the music scene, New Kids on the Block continues to draw crowds, release new music, and command stages across the country. For many performers, longevity becomes the ultimate measure of success. Surviving changing trends, evolving audiences, and an increasingly crowded entertainment landscape is often far more difficult than achieving fame in the first place.

For Donnie Wahlberg, that perspective has only become clearer over time, as the singer recently opened up about the unlikely experience of still sharing the stage with New Kids on the Block four decades after the group's formation.

While attending the American Music Awards in Las Vegas, Donnie Wahlberg looked back on New Kids on the Block's decades-long career and how dramatically the industry's landscape has changed since the group's early years.

"We're very fortunate to still be here," Wahlberg told PEOPLE, before sharing that age has given him a different appreciation for success. "I don't walk down this red carpet wishing I was 20 again. I'm honored to be here at 56."

Recalling past award shows, the singer reflected on a time when he and his bandmates were the young newcomers looking up to established stars walking the red carpet. Today, he finds himself on the opposite side of that experience, watching a new generation of artists begin their own journeys while New Kids on the Block continues to remain part of the conversation.

Rather than dwelling on the past, Wahlberg expressed gratitude for the band's continued relevance and said he hopes younger artists eventually discover the same perspective, believing that some of the most rewarding parts of a career arrive long after the initial spotlight fades.

But for New Kids on the Block, staying power has never been about simply surviving. It has been about continuing to give fans a reason to come back.

Why New Kids on the Block continues to connect with fans 40 years later?

Even after decades in the industry, New Kids on the Block is showing little interest in slowing down. Following the release of 'Still Kids' in 2024, the group's first full-length album in more than a decade, the band has continued strengthening its connection with audiences through its ongoing Las Vegas residency.

According to Donnie Wahlberg, one of the biggest motivations behind the residency is the commitment fans continue to show. He noted that many supporters travel specifically to attend the concerts, making it important for the group to deliver an experience that feels worthwhile every single night.

The residency has already featured surprise appearances and memorable collaborations, including visits from members of New Edition and the Backstreet Boys. Yet Wahlberg insists there is still more in store, teasing that the group plans to bring even more surprises to upcoming shows.

Perhaps the secret to the band's longevity lies in that mindset. While many legacy acts lean heavily on nostalgia, New Kids on the Block appears focused on keeping the experience fresh—for both the audience and themselves. As Donnie Wahlberg put it, the group may not take itself too seriously, but it takes its fans very seriously, a philosophy that seems to carry over into Wahlberg's next chapter on television as well.
