Jon Favreau has finally addressed growing questions surrounding The Mandalorian Season 4, though his latest response may leave fans with more uncertainty than answers. While discussing the future of the franchise, the filmmaker suggested that clarity may now lie more with Dave Filoni than with himself, which suggests that he is not the one calling the shots right now.
Favreau’s comments arrive after months of speculation surrounding whether The Mandalorian would continue as a Disney+ series following the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu. Rumors of a movie replacing Season 4 gained momentum after the show’s third season wrapped with Din Djarin and Grogu seemingly settling into a quieter chapter of their story.
But what exactly does Jon Favreau’s latest response mean for The Mandalorian Season 4?

What Jon Favreau actually said about The Mandalorian Season 4?
While speaking about the future of the franchise, Jon Favreau did not directly confirm or deny whether Season 4 of The Mandalorian would happen. Instead, he appeared to pass the responsibility of answering that question to Dave Filoni, whose role within Lucasfilm has steadily expanded over recent years and is now the president of the company.
"It’s a good question. You should talk to Dave Filoni over there because he's running the show now,” Favreau said while speaking on Variety, hinting at Filoni’s growing creative control over this corner of the Star Wars universe.
That uncertainty is particularly interesting because Favreau previously revealed that scripts for a fourth season had already been written before The Mandalorian Season 3 ended. However, following the resolution of the Hollywood strikes, plans reportedly shifted toward a theatrical release rather than another Disney+ installment, ultimately resulting in The Mandalorian & Grogu, which began filming in California in 2024.
“You can’t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie,” Favreau explained, while speaking to SFX Magazine via GamesRadar, noting that the proposed season was built around multiple characters and assumed viewers had already followed the Disney+ series. Favreau also explained that Season 4 originally would have connected much more directly with Filoni’s upcoming second season of Ahsoka, particularly through the larger storyline surrounding Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Even with Season 4 questions lingering, Lucasfilm appears to be putting much of its attention toward The Mandalorian & Grogu for now.
Why The Mandalorian & Grogu became Lucasfilm’s new priority?
Speculation around Season 4 intensified after reports suggested that Pedro Pascal would not physically return for the series due to scheduling commitments to The Last of Us and Gladiator II, potentially contributing voice work for Din Djarin instead.
Adding to the uncertainty, Brendan Wayne — the performer who physically portrays Din Djarin during action-heavy sequences — said on The Chatooine Show on YouTube that there were currently “no plans” for a fourth season, while emphasizing that Lucasfilm and Disney were focused on the movie. However, Lucasfilm has not officially confirmed that Season 4 has been scrapped.

At the same time, the broader Star Wars universe continues evolving under Filoni’s growing creative leadership, with Ahsoka Season 2 expected to continue the Thrawn storyline that Favreau previously envisioned playing a major role in The Mandalorian’s future.
