Widow's Bay has quickly become one of Apple TV+'s biggest breakout comedies, earning critical acclaim, a second-season renewal and an impressive 19 Emmy nominations. But according to creator Katie Dippold, the series audiences know today began as something entirely different.

Speaking during Apple TV+'s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Dippold reflected on the show's early development, revealing that the original version of Widow's Bay looked nothing like the Emmy-nominated comedy that ultimately made it to the screen.

Long before Matthew Rhys' supernatural comedy found its home on Apple TV+, the project started life as a spec script inspired by another beloved workplace sitcom.

During the Comic-Con panel, Katie Dippold shared that the earliest version of Widow's Bay was originally written as a Parks and Recreation spec script while she was working in the NBC sitcom's writers' room between 2009 and 2012.

"So the first version was a spec for Parks and Rec, but it started off that everyone knew it was a haunted town. There was no Wyck in that version," Dippold said before joking, "Burn every copy."

Stephen Root, who plays Wyck in the series, quickly responded with a smile, saying, "I love you." The revelation highlighted just how dramatically Widow's Bay evolved before becoming one of Apple TV+'s most talked-about original comedies. However, Dippold admitted that even after assembling the cast and selling the project, she never imagined the show's journey would eventually lead to Comic-Con and widespread awards recognition.

The reveal offered fans a glimpse into how much Widow's Bay changed before reaching television screens. But for Dippold, the bigger surprise came after the series premiered, when the supernatural comedy rapidly grew into one of Apple TV+'s most talked-about originals and earned recognition far beyond what she had expected.

Today, Widow's Bay stands as one of Apple TV+'s most acclaimed original series, but Katie Dippold said the road to that point was filled with uncertainty. Speaking at Comic-Con, she recalled constantly wondering whether the project would ever get off the ground, making the show's breakout success and enthusiastic fan response feel all the more rewarding.

"It is fun...I would always predict, 'Will this show get made?' We were taking it out. We did not know that anyone was going to buy it. But then we got this amazing group. But I would never predict it that we would be at Comic-Con," she said.

The creator also spoke about the growing popularity of the series during Collider's Showrunners on Showrunning panel at San Diego Comic-Con, admitting that it took some time before she realized just how much attention the show had received. Although she joked that Reddit still "terrifies" her, she eventually noticed discussions surrounding Widow's Bay increasing rapidly, calling the experience "really shocking."

With Apple TV+ already renewing the series for a second season, Dippold confirmed that the writers' room recently began work on the new episodes and is expected to continue for the next 20 weeks. She also revealed that one of her biggest takeaways from Season 1 was learning to trim scripts and get to key story moments more quickly after making last-minute edits during production.

The strong response has also translated into awards recognition. Widow's Bay earned 19 Primetime Emmy nominations, helping Apple lead all networks in the major drama and comedy categories and cementing the supernatural comedy as one of the streamer's biggest success stories.
