Emily Ratajkowski once thought becoming a single mother was one of the worst things that could happen to a woman. Years later, she has a very different understanding of what that life can look like. The model and actress has opened up about the end of her marriage and the unexpected sense of independence she found after becoming a single mom. Her story is not simply about a marriage ending. It is about realizing that the life she had once feared could actually give her something she never knew she needed.

But that perspective only came after Ratajkowski had lived through the reality she once feared — and the collapse of the marriage that changed how she saw herself.

Who was Emily Ratajkowski’s husband and why did they break up?

Emily Ratajkowski married film producer Sebastian Bear-McClard in a surprise courthouse ceremony in February 2018, just weeks after the pair began dating. The couple later welcomed their son, Sylvester, in March 2021. But according to Ratajkowski, becoming parents marked the beginning of a difficult period in their relationship.

Sebastian Bear-McClard is a film producer who worked behind several acclaimed independent movies, including Good Time and Uncut Gems. He was also a co-founder of Elara Pictures, the production company behind those projects. That gives some context to the life Emily was stepping into when the two married: this was not simply a high-profile Hollywood romance, but a relationship connecting Ratajkowski to a filmmaker deeply embedded in the independent film world.

In her essay for The Cut, Ratajkowski recalled that she and Bear-McClard stopped having s** six months after their son was born. Less than a year later, they separated. She eventually filed for divorce, bringing an end to a marriage that had lasted only a few years. The experience forced Ratajkowski to confront something she had spent much of her life trying to avoid. She said that, even as a child, she viewed becoming a single mother as a kind of personal catastrophe — something that could leave a woman without freedom, choices or an “emergency exit.”

But when the marriage actually ended, the reality was more complicated than the fear she had carried for years. Ratajkowski found herself dealing with the pity of other people while simultaneously trying to figure out who she was outside of her marriage. She began dating again and rediscovering parts of herself that had become difficult to access while raising a young child and navigating the end of her relationship.

And somewhere in the middle of that upheaval, her understanding of what it meant to be a single mother began to change.

How becoming a single mother changed Emily Ratajkowski

The biggest shift for Emily Ratajkowski was realizing that her divorce was not simply something that had happened to her. During the process, her lawyer told her that many women struggle to leave unhappy marriages, a comment that gave her a new perspective on her own decision.

The hardest part may have been how other people saw her afterwards. Ratajkowski said she hated the pity that followed the breakup because it made her feel as though she had been rejected — a woman left behind with a child. That perception clashed with what she was slowly beginning to understand about her own decision. She had not simply lost a husband; she had walked away from a marriage she no longer wanted to remain in.

“I wasn’t left; I left,” Ratajkowski wrote in The Cut. She described that realization as a kind of superpower — the understanding that she had been brave enough to choose a different life, even when doing so came with pain and uncertainty. That realization also changed how she viewed independence. Rather than seeing single motherhood as a life with fewer choices, she began to see the freedom that came with knowing she could walk away from something that was no longer right for her.

Her dating life after the separation became part of that process, too. Ratajkowski described wanting to feel like a woman and a s***** being again, rather than seeing herself only as a mother. But underneath all of it was something deeper: she was learning to define herself without needing a relationship to validate her. She has also become increasingly vocal about the way women are often blamed, judged or pitted against one another for circumstances they did not create — a frustration that has surfaced in her recent defense of other women in the public eye.

For someone who once believed that having a child with the wrong person could “ruin your life,” Ratajkowski’s experience ultimately taught her something very different. Becoming a single mother did not erase her freedom. In her eyes, leaving gave her a clearer understanding of just how much freedom she still had.
