House of the Dragon may have just introduced one of its biggest departures from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, with Season 3 seemingly confirming that Sunfyre died following the Battle of Rook's Rest. If the dragon is truly gone, HBO may have fundamentally changed one of the most important storylines still to come in the Dance of the Dragons.
The latest development has immediately caught the attention of book readers, as Sunfyre is far more than just another dragon in Martin's original story. His journey after Rook's Rest plays a pivotal role in shaping the outcome of the Targaryen civil war, making the show's apparent change one of its most significant deviations from the source material so far.
So, what exactly happens to Sunfyre in Fire & Blood, and has House of the Dragon really rewritten George R.R. Martin's original story?

What happens to Sunfyre in House of the Dragon compared to Fire & Blood?
In House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3, Daemon Targaryen tells Rhaenyra that Baela, while searching for Vhagar and Sheepstealer, found only Sunfyre, describing the dragon as "long dead and decaying." Although viewers never actually see Sunfyre's body, the dialogue strongly suggests that Aegon II's dragon succumbed to the devastating injuries it suffered during the Battle of Rook's Rest.
That marks a dramatic departure from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. In the novel, Sunfyre survives the battle despite suffering catastrophic wounds, including a wing that is nearly torn apart. Unable to fly, the golden dragon remains near Rook's Rest under the protection of Ser Criston Cole's forces, feeding on sheep and cattle while slowly recovering over several months.
As detailed in Fire & Blood, Sunfyre eventually heals enough to take flight again, mysteriously disappearing from Rook's Rest before making his way back to Dragonstone. There, the dragon reunites with King Aegon II Targaryen and continues fighting in the Dance of the Dragons, even surviving another brutal battle against Baela Targaryen's dragon, Moondancer, despite sustaining fresh injuries.
That recovery is far more than a minor plot point. It becomes one of the defining developments of the war, meaning HBO's apparent decision to kill Sunfyre at this stage could dramatically reshape several major events that follow.
Could House of the Dragon still preserve Sunfyre's biggest role?
According to ScreenRant, there is still room for HBO to surprise viewers because Sunfyre's body is never actually shown on screen. While Daemon relays Baela's account, the series stops short of visually confirming the dragon's death, leaving open the possibility that Sunfyre somehow survived after all.
If the dragon truly has died, however, the writers face a much bigger storytelling challenge. In Fire & Blood, Sunfyre remains central to one of the Dance of the Dragons' most shocking and consequential moments, making his apparent absence far more significant than simply removing another dragon from the battlefield.

There are several ways the series could still preserve the broader story. Sunfyre could later be revealed to have survived despite Baela's report, or HBO could introduce another narrative solution that keeps the adaptation consistent with the events previously established in Game of Thrones. Whatever direction the writers choose, the latest episode has ensured that even longtime readers can no longer be entirely certain how the story will unfold.
Whether Sunfyre is truly dead or simply being kept off-screen for a later reveal, House of the Dragon has accomplished something few adaptations manage—it has made even devoted Fire & Blood readers question what comes next. That uncertainty has also fueled speculation about another dragon that could reshape the war, as fans continue to debate how HBO plans to adapt the story's remaining chapters.
