According to Deadline, Jacob Hair, who has directed several episodes of Rick and Morty and served as supervising director since 2019, is being eyed to lead the upcoming film adaptation. The project is still in early development, but it marks the clearest sign yet that Warner Bros. wants to expand the animated universe beyond television.

Series co-creator Dan Harmon has previously hinted at plans for a feature-length installment. The franchise has remained one of Adult Swim’s most recognizable hits since debuting in 2013, blending absurd comedy with surprisingly emotional storytelling across countless alternate realities.

The show previously underwent a major transition after co-creator Justin Roiland exited the series in 2023. Voice actors Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden now portray Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, while the core cast still includes Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke. Adult Swim is also continuing to expand the universe with additional projects, including the upcoming President Curtis spinoff starring Keith David.

As anticipation around the movie grows, many viewers are also wondering where they can stream the next chapter of the animated phenomenon.

Is Rick and Morty season 9 coming to Netflix?

Fans hoping to catch Rick and Morty Season 9 on Netflix may be disappointed, as the series is not expected to return to the platform anytime soon. The upcoming season will instead premiere on Adult Swim and Max in the United States on May 24, 2026, with new episodes releasing weekly during its ten-episode run. Current streaming agreements place the show primarily under Max and Hulu in the U.S., following its removal from Netflix in late 2025. That means viewers looking to stay up to date with the newest adventures of Rick and Morty will likely need access to those services instead of relying on Netflix for future episodes.

International availability could vary depending on regional licensing deals, but as of now, there has been no indication that Season 9 will arrive on Netflix alongside its U.S. release window. For many fans, Max remains the main destination for the franchise moving forward. Viewers outside the U.S. may still see the series appear on select regional streaming platforms later, depending on local distribution agreements.

The combination of a new season and a possible movie announcement signals that the Rick and Morty universe is far from slowing down. With Warner Bros. exploring bigger ambitions for the franchise, fans may soon see the animated duo take their wildest adventure yet beyond television screens.
