Tom Holland is stepping away from the superhero spotlight for a very different kind of challenge. After the commercial success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the actor is taking on Fred Astaire in Sony Pictures’ upcoming biopic, directed by Paul King.

The project is based on Kathleen Riley’s biography The Astaires: Fred & Adele and explores the dancer’s rise from Broadway alongside his sister Adele to becoming one of Hollywood’s defining musical stars.

Now, Holland has found two crucial partners for that journey.

Margaret Qualley will portray Adele Astaire, Fred’s older sister and his original dance partner. Fred and Adele became major stage performers together before Fred eventually established himself as a Hollywood star. Sabrina Carpenter will play Ginger Rogers, the actress and dancer whose screen partnership with Astaire produced some of the most celebrated musical sequences of the 1930s.

Paul King is directing the Sony project, with Amy Pascal producing. The filmmaker has also highlighted the challenge of recreating a chapter of dance history where Adele’s performances survive largely through written accounts, with no known footage of her dancing.

For Qualley, the role adds another period performance to a career that has included Fosse/Verdon, while Carpenter arrives with extensive musical experience alongside her acting work, including The Hate U Give and Work It.

While the Astaire project marks a new creative challenge for Holland, his Marvel success has also dramatically changed his position in Hollywood.

Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man outing has reportedly delivered a substantial financial windfall. According to TheWrap, the actor received a base salary of at least $20 million for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with backend bonuses potentially taking his total earnings beyond $100 million as the film passed $2 billion worldwide. His backend arrangement was reportedly uncapped.

That figure represents a striking rise from the reported $250,000 Holland earned for his first MCU appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Reports have also placed his pay around $500,000 for Spider-Man: Homecoming, $4 million for Spider-Man: Far From Home, and roughly $10 million for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The numbers just prove how significantly Holland’s Spider-Man career has grown financially. His decision to follow that blockbuster run with a Fred Astaire biopic also signals an interest in taking on a role built around dance, performance and Hollywood history.
