Tom Holland and Zendaya are currently the ‘It’ couple of the industry, giving back-to-back billion-dollar behemoths in the span of just a couple of weeks. Zendaya has been having a generational run this year, starting with The Drama, then Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and will finally cap it off with Denis Villeneuve’s much-anticipated Dune: Part III. Two of these projects featured her husband too, and they went on to become the biggest titles of the year.

As much as the pair is currently being showered with praise, they have found an unlikely endorsement for an iconic Hercules star.

At D23, Deadline caught up with Hercules star Susan Egan, who immortalized Meg with her amazing voice-acting skills in the beloved Disney animated movie Hercules. She was asked who came to mind for playing Meg in a live-action remake of Hercules, and she knew exactly who to name. She went for Zendaya without wasting a second thinking and immediately went on to explain the reason behind it.

She has been advocating for Zendaya as Meg for a long time and sees her fit the role perfectly, with her husband, Tom Holland, opposite her as Hercules. According to her, they would be good together in the live-action remake.

“I feel like the world needs it,” said Egan on the casting of Holland and Zendaya in live-action Hercules.

Her opinion was instantly echoed by the interviewer as well, and she went further in the same Deadline interview to detail why she picked Zendaya. She has been following her career since she was a teenager, and she thinks that Zendaya is incredibly grounded, strong, regal, has an amazing voice, and has that little edge needed to play Meg.

This, coming from Susan Egan, is all the validation and blessing the couple would need, as she made Meg into the iconic character she is today.

Susan Egan’s career-defining role

Susan Egan has had a long, fulfilling career, with her brilliant efforts in Broadway, movies, and voice-acting being celebrated and recognised by peers and fans alike. However, she is best known for her portrayal of Megara (Meg) from the Disney animated movie Hercules. As Meg, she brought deep wit, strength, and heart to the role. She played Meg not as a typical damsel, but as a sharp, tired, and funny woman. Her strong Broadway singing voice made her song ‘I Won't Say (I'm in Love)’ a standout classic.

That is why she will always be remembered as Meg, and when she claims that Zendaya would be the perfect Meg, it should be taken seriously. It would be pretty amazing to see her play a sharp and witty Meg along with her beau Tom Holland as Hercules. However, they are currently enjoying Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s monumental success and are planning to take it easy for a while.
