This 1973 Movie’s Puke Scene Might Just Make Sydney Sweeney’s Iconic ‘Euphoria’ Shot Bearable

For one of HBO’s most thought-provoking series, Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney curated the portrait of Cassie with glitter and angst. Eventually, Cassie became the queen of epic slow-motion struts, hyper-saturated emotions, and fantastical scenarios. However, sometimes, reality seeped through the cracks. And the most unbearable moment of all was when she spilled her guts in a hot tub bathed in a realistic puke. Decades before Euphoria presented this revolting scene to audiences, a movie had done the same in a shocking sequence.

This scene was many times nastier than Cassie’s shipwreck in the jacuzzi which looks like child’s play in comparison.

The sequence in question is from 1973’s The Exorcist in which a priest tries to warm up to a possessed young girl, Regan, who responds to his queries by projectile vomiting on him. The scene was especially repulsive due to the throw-up’s neon green color and the fact that it landed on the priest’s face. According to the Behind the Exorcist archive via Thrillist, the film’s director William Friedkin did this intentionally.

A blend of green oatmeal and pea soup was used to mimic the horrible vomit seen in the sequence. But, since the mix was not as “scattershot and convulsive” as they wanted, the crew then “edited in” the “blast” of puke before the cutaway to the priest’s face covered in puke. The exaggerated efforts certainly achieved the effect of dropping viewers’ jaws as they wanted.

A few days back, Sydney Sweeney also explained how Euphoria’s crew pulled off a similar maneuver.

After the second season of Euphoria came out in 2022, Sydney Sweeney called the episode which carried her gut-spilling scene absolutely “chaotic. Earlier this week, she expanded on its events and how it was created during an appearance on the Hot Ones. She explained that the series’ director Sam Levinson, wanted the spewing to be “projectile vomit” much like The Exorcist. To achieve this effect, he used a “pump”, a “tube” and some CGI effects!

The 26-year-old explained that the substance she fake vomited was filling her mouth and exploded out when she opened it. Understandably, she then went on to call it the “most disgusting thing” she had the misfortune of experiencing. However, it served as a spectacular representation of the multicolor exorcism of Cassie’s desire and guilt.
