The Austrian Oak stated on the Fly On The Wall podcast with Dana Carvey and David Space that when he first arrived in the country, he did not “shy” away from working despite holding the Mr. Olympia title seven times. He also debunked the popular belief that bodybuilders made a lot of money by stating that “there was no money” and that in order to make ends meet, he did “crazy” things like working in a mail order business and training other’s biceps and chests.
In an interview with Nick Miller in 2022 the actor talked about the current scenario of the Mr. Olympia contest. He stated that bodybuilders today are heavily compensated in comparison to his time in the sport. He further slammed the Mr. Olympia contest for creating various divisions and how it affected the lives of fellow bodybuilders. Further disclosing a shocking fact that while in the competition he made only $750, and this was in 1974.
Despite his humble beginnings in the small village of Thal, Austria, the actor rose to prominence in the glitzy lights of Hollywood. The young boy who came to America with only $20 in his pocket is now worth much more.
