One harmless phone call can set off a chain of sinister actions and bizarre twists, as seen in Bruce Willis’ Die Hard 3. A similar phone call also becomes a source of trouble in the upcoming psychological thriller The Runner, putting its protagonist, Maia, in a nightmare she never saw coming. What begins as an ordinary day quickly takes a terrifying turn, pushing her to her limits as she races across London. But how far can Maia push herself, and just how far is a mother willing to go for her child? Those questions are the focus of The Runner, which brings Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald back for director duties.

The plot of The Runner

The Runner follows Maia, played by Gal Gadot, who is an elite lawyer in London’s legal world and has a perfect life and career. However, her carefully controlled life is shattered when she receives a phone call informing her that her son has been kidnapped. That begins Maia's journey as she is given a series of instructions that she must follow without telling anyone, as she is forced to race through the streets of London, carrying out each command against a terrifying deadline.

And with her son’s life hanging in the balance, Maia must find a way out to save her child. However, when will this race end for Maia? With much at stake, The Runner appears to be a promising action thriller. But when can fans watch the movie?

Release date of The Runner

The Runner is set to release on September 2, 2026, and will be available to stream on Amazon. The movie’s trailer is already out, and it shows a first glimpse of Gal Gadot’s Maia running through the streets of London. Her frantic race raises the stakes and tension around how this sinister chain of events will ultimately end, which is sure to keep viewers at the edge of their seats.
