The Odyssey is on the verge of doing something remarkable: passing the full domestic box-office run of Oppenheimer in just 13 days. That is a striking contrast to the slower burn of Nolan’s 2023 hit, which rode the Barbenheimer wave to become one of the most talked-about films of the year and ultimately grossed nearly a billion worldwide.

Even with all that momentum, Nolan’s latest epic is beating it with ease.

The reason is simple: The Odyssey opened like a monster and has barely let up. Deadline reported that the film posted a $14.7 million second Monday and was headed for roughly $16 million on Tuesday, putting it at about $320.1 million domestically and on track to clear $330 million by Wednesday. That means it will outpace Oppenheimer’s entire U.S. and Canada run in almost no time at all.

Its second weekend also helped cement the gap. The film earned an estimated $84.5 million in weekend two, dropping only 32% from its launch and staying far ahead of Oppenheimer’s pace. At the same point in release, The Odyssey was already 62% ahead domestically, while worldwide it had surged past $639 million.

That performance is especially impressive because it is happening before major overseas markets have even fully rolled in. Deadline notes that The Odyssey is already Nolan’s third-highest-grossing domestic film, behind only The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. It has also become Matt Damon’s biggest domestic hit in a leading role, which underlines just how broad the film’s appeal has been.

That dominant run may soon face its first real test from another major release.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being positioned as one of the biggest theatrical launches ever, with early tracking suggesting a massive domestic and worldwide opening for Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker. Even in a year crowded with major blockbusters, the film is generating rare levels of excitement because Spider-Man remains Marvel’s most reliable crowd-pleaser.

The film is also getting a huge lift from its broader MCU connections. Its place in the lead-up to Avengers: Doomsday has helped sustain buzz, even though Marvel has kept much of the crossover material out of the marketing so far. That makes Brand New Day feel like both a standalone event and a launchpad for the next phase of the franchise.

Tracking reports now put the movie in the range of a top-five opening of all time, with some estimates even pointing toward a global debut near $800 million. If the projections hold, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could become the film that slows down the dominance of The Odyssey. Nolan’s epic has been running unopposed, but a Spider-Man launch of this scale would likely shift both attention and ticket sales.
