Christopher Nolan has reserved some of the highest praise of his career for Samantha Morton's performance in The Odyssey, revealing that the crew's reaction to one of her scenes reminded him of Heath Ledger's work on The Dark Knight. The filmmaker's comments quickly became one of the biggest talking points ahead of the film's release.

Morton has since reflected on the recognition, opening up about landing the role of Circe and explaining why Nolan's words meant so much after more than three decades in the industry.

While discussing Samantha Morton's portrayal of the witch goddess Circe, Christopher Nolan admitted there were "no limitations" to what she brought to the role before recalling a rare moment that unfolded on set after one of her takes.

"There are no limitations on her performance...After one of her takes, the crew gave her a great round of applause…. The last time that had happened was with Heath Ledger on The Dark Knight," Nolan told The Los Angeles Times.

The comparison carries particular weight, given Ledger's widely celebrated, Oscar-winning performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight. For Nolan to draw a parallel between the two moments underscores the impact Morton made despite The Odyssey featuring one of the director's most star-studded ensembles, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway.

Morton plays Circe, the mystical goddess who encounters Odysseus and his surviving crew after they wash ashore on her island. In one of the film's standout sequences, she transforms the desperate sailors into pigs before later revealing the dangerous path Odysseus must follow to return home.

Nolan reportedly achieved much of the transformation sequence using practical filmmaking techniques, making Morton's commanding performance the emotional centerpiece of the scene.

Samantha Morton says Christopher Nolan's praise was emotional after decades in the industry

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Samantha Morton recalled receiving the unexpected phone call informing her that Christopher Nolan wanted to meet her. She admitted she became emotional immediately, even before learning what project the acclaimed filmmaker wanted to discuss.

"Christopher Nolan would like to meet you," she recalled being told. "I cried. I was like, 'Wow, really?' I didn't even know what the project was when I met him."

Morton also revealed that she had never read The Odyssey before joining the film and intentionally avoided reading multiple interpretations of Circe, preferring to build the character directly from Nolan's screenplay. She said the script made the mythical figure feel remarkably contemporary and relatable, allowing her to approach the role on instinct rather than outside influences.

"It validates the fact that I'm good at what I do and I care...I'm very grateful and I take it very seriously." Looking back on Nolan's public praise, Morton admitted the recognition was deeply meaningful after a career that has seen both highs and lows.

While Morton's performance has already emerged as one of the film's biggest breakout performances, Nolan's comparison elevated it even further. For the veteran actress, the rare endorsement was not only a recognition of her work in the film but also an affirmation of a career spanning more than three decades.
