(Spoiler Warning: Major spoilers ahead for The Boys Series Finale)

The Boys creator Erik Kripke has opened up about how he expects fans to react to the show’s finale, admitting he already anticipates a deeply divided response. Speaking at the show’s L.A. finale event, Kripke acknowledged that after dealing with online backlash throughout the final season, he has accepted that the ending may not please everyone.

The hit superhero satire recently concluded its five-season run with major deaths and emotionally charged endings for several central characters, including Homelander, Billy Butcher and The Deep. The finale also wrapped up long-running arcs for key members of The Boys while leaving the wider franchise universe open for future expansion through spinoffs like Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico.

But while finale reactions are already beginning to flood online, Kripke appears less concerned with universal approval and more focused on whether audiences feel something by the end.

Why Erik Kripke believes a divided reaction to The Boys finale is unavoidable?

After facing criticism online throughout the season, Kripke admitted that audience reactions, positive or negative, no longer feel entirely within his control. Instead, the creator said he has shifted his focus toward making sure the ending sparks emotion, even if that emotion turns into disagreement among viewers.

“I want everyone to love it, it’s not fun to go online and have like a thousand comments in a row saying ‘You suck, you suck, you suck, you suck,’ but I’ve sort of made peace with it’s going to be polarized like everything else,” Kripke said while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at The Boys finale event, adding that he has come to accept that strong reactions — positive or negative — are simply part of ending a major show.

Kripke also pushed back against some of the criticism surrounding the final season, noting that online reactions do not always reflect the broader audience response. According to the showrunner, strong viewership numbers helped reassure him that the final chapter was still connecting with audiences despite vocal criticism online.

But even with The Boys now officially over, Kripke suggests the franchise itself may still have unfinished business.

What comes next for The Boys universe after the finale?

Although the main story has reached its conclusion, Kripke confirmed that the larger The Boys universe will continue moving forward through multiple spinoff projects. Among them is Vought Rising, led by Jensen Ackles, while The Boys: Mexico also remains in development.

Kripke also revealed he hopes to revisit characters from Gen V despite that show ending after two seasons, explaining that he still feels there is more story left to explore for several of its younger characters. For the creator, however, the core story of The Boys itself feels complete after five seasons of escalating chaos and emotional payoffs.

Heading into the finale’s aftermath, one thing already seems clear: whether fans love the ending or hate it, Kripke expected strong opinions from the very beginning.
