CBS announced that Stephen Colbert’s final week will kick off on Monday, May 18, with a special episode titled The Worst of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, which the network has clarified is “not a clip show.” The following night, Tuesday’s episode will feature fellow former Daily Show alum Jon Stewart alongside acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg, while David Byrne will join Colbert for a musical performance.

Wednesday, May 20 — Colbert’s penultimate show — will see the host himself participating in his fan-favorite segment “The Colbert Questionert,” along with a performance from Bruce Springsteen. However, CBS has not yet revealed who will appear during the series finale on Thursday, May 21, leaving fans to speculate whether any surprise guests may still be waiting in the wings.

The final stretch also follows several notable farewell moments from recent weeks, including appearances from fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver, who reunited on the show as the group affectionately known as “Strike Force Five.”

As Stephen Colbert prepares for his final episode, both Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel have reportedly decided their own programs will go dark on May 21 in solidarity. Instead of airing new episodes opposite Colbert’s finale, both NBC and ABC are expected to run reruns that night.

The gesture comes after months of public support for Colbert following CBS’s announcement of its cancellation, which sparked significant discussion across television and political circles. While the network maintained that ending The Late Show was strictly a 'financial decision', many fans and industry figures stand firmly by the argument that it was not, viewing Colbert's exit as the end of a major era for late-night television.

Although at the same time, Colbert himself already appears to be looking toward his next creative chapter. Earlier this year, he revealed plans to co-write a new Lord of the Rings film alongside his son Peter Colbert and longtime Tolkien collaborator Philippa Boyens.
