Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton is already open to returning for the next installment in Tom Holland's Spider-Man films. His comments come as the fourth Spider-Man film continues what has been a historic run for the franchise.
Cretton reflected on his experience working with Marvel and Sony, while making it clear that Brand New Day does not necessarily have to be his final collaboration with the MCU.
Destin Daniel Cretton wants to return to the MCU
Destin Daniel Cretton's experience making Brand New Day appears to have left him eager to continue working with the Marvel family. Speaking exclusively with TheWrap, the director offered a particularly clear answer when asked whether he would consider returning for another MCU movie.
“Would I be open to doing another movie with this family? Definitely,” Cretton told TheWrap. The answer leaves little doubt that he would welcome another opportunity to work with Marvel, even though he has not specifically confirmed a return for Spider-Man 5.

Cretton has developed a strong relationship with the people behind the Spider-Man franchise during production, particularly Tom Holland, Zendaya, Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal and Tom Rothman, he told TheWrap. That familiarity appears to have made the experience especially rewarding for the filmmaker, whose Marvel plans took an unexpected turn before he ultimately landed behind the camera on Brand New Day.
The director's comments offer an intriguing glimpse at what could come next for Cretton after Brand New Day delivered a gigantic $360 million domestic opening weekend and surpassed Avengers: Endgame to set a new all-time domestic opening record. The film then reached $1 billion worldwide in just six days before crossing $1.67 billion globally within its first two weeks, while its $145 million domestic second weekend ranked as the third-biggest second weekend in box office history. While another Spider-Man movie has not been confirmed, Cretton's willingness to reunite with the MCU family certainly keeps the possibility alive.
But before he can think about what comes next, it is worth looking at the creative choice that helped make Brand New Day such a different Spider-Man movie.
Brand New Day was pitched as a deeper, street-level Spider-Man story
Destin Daniel Cretton's involvement with Brand New Day began after he spoke with the larger team behind the franchise, including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sony chief Tom Rothman, Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige. The filmmaker said the direction they were pursuing initially felt somewhat vague, but something about their pitch made him feel that the project could be a good fit for him.
“They pitched it to me as we cannot go bigger so we have to go deeper,” Cretton said of the conversation. The team wanted to take the franchise “back to street level,” a notable shift for Holland's Peter Parker after Spider-Man: Homecoming had quickly expanded his world through Tony Stark's advanced technology and battles that took him into outer space.

That approach marked a deliberate change in scale for the character. After being outfitted with increasingly advanced gadgetry and becoming involved in conflicts far beyond New York, Peter Parker was being brought back toward the more grounded territory that had initially defined his introduction in the MCU.
Cretton's response to that pitch ultimately helped determine his involvement in the film. Although the idea was still taking shape when it was first presented to him, he saw enough in the direction the team was pursuing to believe that Brand New Day could be the right Marvel project for him, and it is breaking every box office record now.
Did bringing Spider-Man back to street level make Brand New Day better than the previous Tom Holland films? Let us know in the comments!
