Spider-Man: Brand New Day has not swung into theaters yet, but that has not stopped fans from talking about Tom Holland’s fourth standalone Spider-Man movie. The new director, who took over after Jon Watts’ first three films, has also hinted at a tonal shift for this next chapter in Peter Parker’s story, causing a buzz among fans. Now, after teasing a crucial detail about the film, he shared the key lesson he took from his latest MCU project, Wonder Man, for the Spider-Man movie.

And if the success of that last project is any indication, this lesson could be a clear hint of what fans can expect from the upcoming Spider-Man adventure.

Destin Daniel Cretton, who worked on both Wonder Man and Spider-Man: Brand New Day as a director, is the connection between the two projects. While both are different stories, there is one lesson that Cretton believes he learnt from Wonder Man and took to heart while directing the Spider-Man movie.

“To look at this show not through the lens of a superhero, but just purely through the lens of a character that I loved... that's the same lens that I look at a giant movie like Spider-Man,” he said.

“It's 'who is Peter Parker?' and where is he now? And what is the character journey that I want to see him on." Cretton told Discussing Film.

That unique mindset is what connects both projects. Previously, Cretton directed the first two episodes of Wonder Man, Matinee and Self-Tape and also co-created the show, along with Andrew Guest. He also boasts of directing some scenes in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. And following Wonder Man, he also directed Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where he promises to bring something new and different.

Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed both Wonder Man and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, had a hands-on, character-focused approach to creating Wonder Man. He drew heavily from his personal experiences in Hollywood, bringing together the struggles of everyday life behind the glamor.

“We wanted to capture the LA and the side of Hollywood that you don’t typically see portrayed on film,” he told Discussing Film.

That speaks volumes about his dedication. Now, Wonder Man may have quietly landed on streaming, but its refreshing, character-driven, and heartwarming take on a superhero hiding his powers is loved by fans and critics alike, earning a strong 90% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
