Russell Crowe hyped up the Highlander fandom ahead of the much-anticipated release. More than a decade after the franchise was last seen on screen, Highlander is making a comeback with a new film starring Henry Cavill. The Man of Steel actor will take on the role of Connor MacLeod in the fantasy adventure, and there is much anticipation.

Fans are eager to see whether the reboot can breathe new life into the franchise. And if Crowe's recent Highlander update is any indication, this could be one of the biggest movies of next year.

Russell Crowe recently spoke about the upcoming Highlander reboot during his appearance at the Taormina Film Festival. He revealed that the team has already wrapped filming on the movie. And along with the exciting update, the actor also expressed his confidence in the film's potential, as he mentioned the director, Chad Stahelski.

“It’s an Amazon production, and it’s going to be fantastic. It’s by Chad Stahelski, who directed all the John Wick movies, so you know [he] is incapable of directing a film that is not exciting,” he said.

Stahelski has previously worked as a stunt coordinator in the film The Matrix and is best known for helming the John Wick franchise. Now, he will take charge of the Highlander reboot. Crowe is set to play Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, MacLeod's mentor.

“We are only halfway through production but already feel we are creating something truly special," was what Henry Cavill stated earlier about the project. Cavill also spoke highly of the film during its first-look presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. From the looks of it, Crowe is not the only one excited about Highlander.

A few glimpses of the movie which previously circulated online look quite intriguing. And with filming now complete, when is Highlander expected to be released?

Release date of Highlander

As of now, Highlander does not have an official release date, but it is expected to arrive in 2027. Now, the news that filming has wrapped is an encouraging sign, especially since the project faced several production delays over the past few years. Henry Cavill was announced as the film's lead in 2021, while Russell Crowe joined the cast much later in 2025.

The movie experienced further delays after Cavill sustained injuries during the rehearsals last year, and several other reasons. Production finally began in early January this year, and with filming now complete, Highlander appears to be one step closer to reaching theaters.
