Zsa Zsa Zemeckis is stepping into the spotlight with her biggest acting role yet. The daughter of Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis has officially landed the lead role in an upcoming indie romance described as being in the vein of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The casting marks a major step forward for the young actor, who has quietly begun building screen credits in recent years. While she has already appeared in a handful of projects, this will mark her first time leading a feature film.

With the project currently in pre-production and filming expected to begin this summer, the role could become Zsa Zsa’s biggest opportunity yet to establish herself beyond Hollywood legacy status and begin carving out an identity of her own on screen.

Zsa Zsa Zemeckis to lead in a modern Romeo and Juliet-style drama

Zsa Zsa Zemeckis is set to lead State-Crossed Lovers, an upcoming indie romance described as being in the vein of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, as exclusively reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The film will be directed by Alyssa Rallo Bennett for Stonestreet Studios and I Ain't Playin' Films.

"When Zsa Zsa read for the role, I was immediately struck by the intelligence and restraint she brought to Mila...She has an incredible ability to balance the character’s rebellious passion with the emotional conflict and vulnerability underneath it," Bennett told The Hollywood Reporter.

“Mila is constantly navigating impossible choices, and Zsa Zsa captured that tension in a way that felt both grounded and deeply compelling,” she further added.

At the center of State-Crossed Lovers is Mila Hart, a secretly pregnant 17-year-old trying to navigate conservative parents, restrictive laws, and an increasingly uncertain future. While caught in a passionate relationship with a boyfriend in his 20s, Mila is forced to confront difficult truths about her upbringing and make life-altering decisions.

With its story of two young lovers struggling against family expectations and societal pressures, the film has already drawn comparisons to Romeo and Juliet, though filtered through a more contemporary and politically charged lens.

But while State-Crossed Lovers marks Zsa Zsa’s first lead role, the actor has already quietly begun building experience in film.

Zsa Zsa Zemeckis’ is not new to the big screen

Though this will mark her lead feature debut, Zsa Zsa Zemeckis is not entirely new to the screen. Her previous credits include Here, where she appeared opposite Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, along with the feature Jump. With its story of two young lovers struggling against family expectations and societal pressures, the film has already drawn comparisons to Romeo and Juliet, joining a wave of recent Romeo and Juliet reimagining that have continued bringing Shakespeare’s tragic love story back into pop culture.
