Robert Downey Jr on How Acting as Iron Man for Decades Made Him ‘Doubt’ His Acting Skills for Something Like ‘Oppenheimer’

With the stakes being higher than ever, Universal Pictures unveiled a glimpse of
the Christopher Nolan Magnum opus, Oppenheimer, to rattle its audience. With a
director like him at the height of his abilities coupled with his 20-year-old
collaborator, this forthcoming movie is said to be one of its kind. Nonetheless,
apart from the natural tension between the two, the movie relied upon an equally
great ensemble that made up the perfect spokes for the wheel. With Hollywood
A-listers like Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and MCU heartthrob Robert Downey Jr,
this cast featurette has summed up to be what you call a heart-in-your-mouth
thriller.

Embodying one of the most complex conflicting yet stoic characters in history
might be a cup of tea for Nolan veteran like Cillian Murphy. Doing his sixth
movie together with the master at work, Murphy was pretty sure of one thing. And
it was not to execute the role, but to become the role. And while Oppenheimer
went high at it, keeping up with him in his paradox were the four other horsemen
of the story without whom, probably humankind could not have existed.

In an interview with the New York Times

Downey Jr. of them walked us through the challenges that came with it. Speaking
to the outlet about the complexities that came with us, Downey said, “Yes. A
hundred percent, and I knew there was a point where Chris Nolan was endorsing“.
“Let’s work those other muscles,” he said, all the while rendering him devoid of
his usual go-to things. As hilarious as their interviews were

The actor was apparently speaking about his manner of speaking really fast in

WHY WAS IT A CHALLENGE FACED BY ROBERT DOWNEY JR. IN OPPENHEIMER?

Comparing the nuances of his usual-go-to MCU character in a cape suit, this is
something that altered his life, he said. Downey, who plays the role of the US
Atomic Energy Commission Chair, was initially doubtful of his acting in the
mind-bending masterpiece. Having played the fictional Iron Man, the Hollywood
A-lister was a hundred percent concerned about his versatility.

The weight of his instinct from the MCU affecting his acting skills as a support
star in Oppenheimer bothered him quite a lot. Nonetheless, he got past it. And
him doubting his own skills spoke for themselves about how profound a movie this
has been. Reports suggest everything that Nolan has done so far until now was a
prelude to something worth it.
