Reese Witherspoon has revealed that she kept Elle Woods' original Legally Blonde wardrobe for 25 years before giving pieces of it away to the star of the upcoming prequel series Elle.
The beloved comedy franchise is preparing to enter a new chapter with Prime Video's prequel, which follows a younger version of Elle Woods before the events of the 2001 film. The project will see a newcomer step into one of modern pop culture's most recognizable roles.
As anticipation builds for the series, Witherspoon recently shared how a request from the production led to a full-circle moment connecting the original Elle Woods to her successor.

Reese Witherspoon passed the iconic wardrobe to the new Elle Woods
Reese Witherspoon revealed that several pieces from her original Legally Blonde wardrobe found a new home with Lexi Minetree, who plays a younger version of Elle Woods in the upcoming Prime Video series. The actress explained that the idea came about after Minetree's stylist reached out to ask whether any outfits from that era still existed.
"Her stylist is a friend of mine for so many years, and she said to me, 'Do you have any dresses from the time period?' And I have all the wardrobe in storage, so I sent her as many dresses as they wanted," Witherspoon told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.
Rather than selecting specific pieces herself, Witherspoon encouraged the team to choose whichever dresses worked best. One of the outfits ultimately chosen carried special significance, as it was the same dress she had worn to a Legally Blonde premiere roughly 25 years ago.
According to Witherspoon, the dress fit Minetree perfectly, prompting Fallon to compare the moment to Cinderella finding her slipper. But the wardrobe handoff was only one part of a much bigger celebration taking place
Reese Witherspoon reflected on Elle Woods’ lasting impact during the reunion
The wardrobe story emerged shortly after the Legally Blonde cast reunited publicly for the first time in 25 years during "Elle World," a fan event celebrating the upcoming series. Jennifer Coolidge, Selma Blair, Ali Larter, Matthew Davis and Victor Garber joined Reese Witherspoon as fans celebrated the legacy of the beloved comedy.
"When I walked in and I saw this moment, it just felt like it was galvanizing how I felt about playing this character — I'm gonna cry...Playing this character for 25 years has been the privilege of my life."Witherspoon told attendees at the event.

The actress went on to explain that fans frequently share stories about attending law school because of Elle Woods, naming their daughters after the character, or finding inspiration in her journey. Those experiences, she said, are a reminder of why the character continues to resonate more than two decades after her big-screen debut.
With Elle set to premiere on Prime Video on July 1, the passing of the original wardrobe feels like more than a costume story. For many fans, it represents a symbolic handoff from the actress who made Elle Woods a cultural icon to the performer introducing her to an entirely new generation.
