Few filmmakers have built a relationship with music quite like John Carney. Across films such as Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street, the Irish writer-director has earned a reputation for blending heartfelt storytelling with memorable songs, creating a distinct style that has resonated with audiences for years.
That reputation has also made Carney one of the most respected voices in the genre. His latest film, Power Ballad, continues his exploration of music, ambition, and personal relationships, bringing together Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas for a story that examines the complicated line between artistic success and personal fulfillment.
For one of the film's stars, however, the project's biggest attraction had little to do with the plot itself. Instead, it came down to the opportunity to collaborate with a filmmaker whose work he had admired for years.

Paul Rudd says working with John Carney made joining Power Ballad an easy decision
While discussing the film with DiscussingFilm, Paul Rudd revealed that John Carney's involvement was the primary reason he agreed to come aboard. The actor's admiration for the filmmaker was so strong that the decision required very little convincing. Speaking during a recent screening of Power Ballad, Rudd explained just how much he wanted the chance to work with Carney.
“The idea of just getting to work with John was the main thing. Even if I didn’t like the script, I would have said yes!”
The comment highlights the level of respect Carney commands among performers. Over the years, the filmmaker has developed a reputation for crafting music-driven stories that feel both intimate and emotionally authentic, making him a sought-after collaborator for actors looking to challenge themselves creatively.
For Rudd, that opportunity appears to have outweighed every other consideration. But once production began, he quickly found himself facing a challenge that was far outside his usual comfort zone.
Why Power Ballad required a different side of Paul Rudd?
In the film, Paul Rudd plays Rick, a former musician turned wedding singer whose life is thrown into turmoil after one of his songs helps reignite the career of a struggling pop star played by Nick Jonas. What begins as a shared passion for music gradually evolves into a rivalry shaped by ambition, recognition, and regret.
“I'd sung in movies before, but it was always silly. This was real, actual singing.” Rudd said while speaking to PEOPLE about the experience, The actor went on to describe the process as nerve-racking, particularly while performing alongside Jonas and Carney, who is a musician himself.

The role required Rudd to approach music differently than he had in previous projects. Although he has sung on screen before, those performances often leaned into comedy. Power Ballad, however, demanded something more serious and emotionally grounded.
That combination of musical storytelling and emotional vulnerability is exactly what has defined many of Carney's most celebrated films. For Rudd, who recently demonstrated his generosity through a high-profile fundraising effort for children's charity, Power Ballad ultimately became more than just another acting role—it became a creative leap worth taking.
