Paramount Pictures' Children of Blood and Bone is shaping up to be one of the studio's biggest fantasy releases, bringing Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling novel to the big screen with an all-star cast and director Gina Prince-Bythewood at the helm. The adaptation has been years in the making and remains one of the most anticipated young-adult films on the release calendar. Adeyemi was closely involved in the project from the beginning, co-writing the screenplay and serving as an executive producer.

The fact has made her recent social media activity particularly noticeable to fans, many of whom wondered why she had stopped promoting the movie.

The author has now addressed those questions herself. However, her comments have sparked even more discussion about the film and her relationship with it.

Why has Tomi Adeyemi distanced herself from the movie?

In a series of posts shared on TikTok, Tomi Adeyemi revealed that she no longer supports the Children of Blood and Bone adaptation and confirmed that she will not watch the finished film. While the author referred to painful experiences behind the scenes, she stopped short of explaining exactly what led to her decision.

"There is a reason I will not post anything about the adaptation of my work. That's all," Adeyemi wrote. She also encouraged readers who wanted to support her to purchase the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy through independent bookstores, adding that it had been "painful" to keep her feelings private and apologizing to fans who believed she no longer cared about the story.

The author also shared a screenshot showing she had blocked cast member Amandla Stenberg on social media after asking the actress not to contact her or mention her name in interviews. However, Adeyemi did not elaborate on what prompted that decision, and neither Stenberg nor Paramount Pictures has publicly commented on her statements.

How Powerful Is He-Man Compared to Other Fantasy Heroes?

"I do not mind anyone going to watch the film," Adeyemi later clarified in the comments section of her TikTok post. While she has chosen to publicly distance herself from the adaptation, Paramount's ambitious fantasy epic continues to move toward its theatrical release, raising fresh questions about what lies ahead for the project.

What does this mean for Paramount's adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone?

The controversy does not appear to have changed Paramount's plans for the film. Children of Blood and Bone remains scheduled to arrive in theaters on January 15, 2027, with Gina Prince-Bythewood directing from a screenplay she co-wrote with Tomi Adeyemi. The adaptation features a star-studded ensemble that includes Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, Idris Elba, Damson Idris, Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, and Amandla Stenberg.

Based on the first novel in Adeyemi's acclaimed Legacy of Orïsha trilogy, the story is set in an African fantasy kingdom where a young woman embarks on a quest to restore the magic that was violently stolen from her people, joining forces with the king's daughter and son to challenge his oppressive rule.

When Paramount announced the project, the studio praised the novel's world-building and said it believed the story would resonate with audiences around the world. While questions remain about Adeyemi's comments, the movie continues to move toward its planned theatrical release. For now, fans are left with an unusual situation: one of the year's biggest fantasy adaptations is moving forward, even as its own author has chosen to publicly distance herself from it.
