James Spader revealed Ultron has been lurking inside Vision’s mind ever since the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Spader delivered a chilling performance as Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron, voicing the rogue AI bent on human extinction. He now returns in human form for VisionQuest, Spader’s Ultron has not been destroyed but hiding within Vision’s consciousness.

In a Rotten Tomatoes interview with Paul Bettany by his side, James Spader revealed what Ultron has been doing during his strange imprisonment.

“He’s been painting & making trouble,” Spader said, offering an unexpectedly mundane answer for one of the MCU’s most dangerous artificial intelligences. Spader elaborated on Ultron’s unusual existence inside Vision.

“He’s had access to the internet, television, history, and he has just been consuming & doing a bit of painting,” he told Rotten Tomatoes. Ultron was created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner as an artificial intelligence intended to protect humanity. His programming quickly spiraled into a dangerous ideology, leading him to conclude that humanity itself represented the greatest threat to peace.

His confrontation with the Avengers ended with his physical forms being destroyed, yet VisionQuest now establishes that his story did not end there. Recent details surrounding the series describe Ultron as a “psychopathic life coach” to Vision, creating a bizarre dynamic between creator and creation. .
