The case remained cold for decades, partly because several of the victims could not be identified and forensic technology such as modern DNA testing and genetic genealogy was not available at the time. Campbell began having his classes investigate the case in 2018, using the mystery as the foundation for a project-based approach to teaching sociology.

The documentary follows his 2025 class as the students continue the investigation, learning how to file public-record requests, examine overlooked information, and pursue new leads.
