True-crime fans are used to knowing exactly what they are getting into: a cold case, a trail of evidence, investigators chasing leads, and eventually some attempt at an answer. But every once in a while, a documentary comes along that finds a completely unexpected way into a familiar genre, and Murder 101 is one of those unusual cases.

The three-part series takes a very different route into true crime, turning an investigation that has lingered for decades into something far more personal and unexpected. Murder 101 is available to stream exclusively on Prime Video, with all three episodes of the limited docuseries available to watch. The series premiered on July 13, 2026, and Amazon MGM Studios lists the title as available worldwide.

Directed by Stacey Lee, the three-part documentary is based on the podcast of the same name and is produced by KT Studios and Freshman Year. For viewers looking for a short true-crime watch rather than a sprawling multi-episode investigation, the three-part format also makes Murder 101 an easy series to pick up. But the real reason it stands out has less to do with its episode count and much more to do with the people at the center of its investigation.

That is where the real story begins. What happens when students take on a decades-old m***** case?

What is Murder 101 about?

Murder 101 follows Alex Campbell, a high school sociology teacher in Elizabethton, Tennessee, whose students take on the decades-old Redhead Murders, a series of unsolved k******* involving women whose bodies were discovered in the same area of Tennessee during a six-month period in 1984 and 1985.

The case remained cold for decades, partly because several of the victims could not be identified and forensic technology such as modern DNA testing and genetic genealogy was not available at the time. Campbell began having his classes investigate the case in 2018, using the mystery as the foundation for a project-based approach to teaching sociology.

The documentary follows his 2025 class as the students continue the investigation, learning how to file public-record requests, examine overlooked information, and pursue new leads. Some students become deeply invested in the case, while others are encountering it for the first time, creating an unusually intimate look at what happens when a classroom assignment begins reaching beyond school walls.

At its heart, Murder 101 is not simply about solving a cold case. The students also confront how the victims were portrayed when the m****** first received media attention and why their lives were often reduced to labels rather than treated as stories belonging to real people. That combination of an unresolved mystery and an investigation led by students gives Murder 101 a distinctly different identity within the crowded true-crime genre.
