Matt Damon has revealed why George Clooney never pushed for a bigger paycheck during his time on ER, even though one of his co-stars was reportedly earning around $1 million per episode. According to Damon, Clooney was focused on leaving television behind to pursue a career in movies.

The story offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Clooney's career, when ER was one of the biggest shows on television. Rather than locking himself into a longer contract for a higher salary, the actor chose flexibility over financial gain.

Why George Clooney didn't renegotiate his ER contract despite the pay gap?

During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, Matt Damon recalled that ER attracted around 40 million viewers each week, making it one of television's biggest shows. He explained that George Clooney deliberately chose not to renegotiate his contract because doing so would have required him to commit to more years on the series.

"He could have renegotiated, but he would have had to give more years." Damon explained that while co-star Anthony Edwards was earning about $1 million per episode toward the end of his run, Clooney remained on a much smaller deal because his priority was moving into feature films.

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Damon explained that television and film were viewed very differently at the time. He said actors were often typecast as TV stars, making the transition to Hollywood far more difficult than it is today.
