Matt Damon has reflected on one of the biggest missed opportunities of his career, admitting that passing on James Cameron's Avatar is a decision that still lingers with him nearly two decades later. Speaking alongside Anne Hathaway during Konbini Video Club, the Oscar winner opened up after spotting Cameron's blockbuster among the films on display, revealing that the chance to collaborate with the acclaimed filmmaker slipped away because of a scheduling conflict.
Although Damon has starred in some of Hollywood's biggest franchises over the years, he confessed that Avatar occupies a unique place in his career—not because he regrets not being part of the film's success and legacy, but because it represented what he believed would be his only opportunity to work with one of cinema's most celebrated directors.

As the conversation turned to Avatar, Matt Damon joked that seeing the film reminded him of "all the movies that I've passed on" before quickly clarifying that he does notdwell on missed opportunities. Instead, he explained that Avatar has remained memorable for one specific reason—James Cameron.
"I knew it was going to be my one chance to work with Jim Cameron, and I couldn't do it because I had a scheduling conflict," Damon said, adding that the experience "stays with me" because he considers Cameron brilliant and has long admired his work.

Damon also noted that Cameron has spent nearly two decades immersed in the Avatar universe, making another collaboration increasingly unlikely. Even so, the actor maintained an optimistic perspective, concluding that "everything happens for a reason."
While the conversation focused on Damon's admiration for Cameron, the story surrounding his missed Avatar opportunity has continued to generate discussion long after the film's release.
Although Damon has often reflected on the missed opportunity, the story took an unexpected turn years later when James Cameron publicly offered his own account of the long-discussed Avatar decision.
James Cameron recently addressed the long-standing Avatar story
Over the years, Matt Damon has spoken publicly about missing Avatar, including sharing the widely discussed "10%" story that he walked away from what could have become one of Hollywood's biggest financial opportunities because of his commitment to The Bourne Ultimatum. The anecdote has become one of the industry's most enduring "what if" stories.
However, James Cameron recently offered additional context while reflecting on the same situation to The Hollywood Reporter. According to the filmmaker, Damon was never formally offered the lead role or a 10% share of the film's profits, as has often been reported. Instead, Cameron explained that their conversations ended early after Damon informed him about his existing scheduling commitment, making it an availability issue rather than a declined offer.

Despite that clarification, Cameron had nothing but praise for the actor, describing Damon as "one of the greatest movie stars in the world" and expressing hope that the pair will eventually collaborate on a future project. While that long-awaited partnership has yet to materialise, Damon is currently leading another ambitious cinematic epic in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Even so, his latest comments make it clear that, nearly two decades after Avatar reshaped blockbuster filmmaking, the missed opportunity was never about its record-breaking box office success—it was about the chance to work with one of the filmmakers he has admired most throughout his career.
