“Marvel of His Day” – Christopher Nolan Draws Parallels Between ‘The Odyssey’ and Modern Superheroes

Christopher Nolan reveals how The Odyssey continues to shape the DNA of today’s superhero blockbusters. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan is not just making another film; he is taking on one of the most foundational stories ever told. With The Odyssey, the director behind Oppenheimer, Interstellar, and The Dark Knight trilogy is bringing Homer’s epic to life on a scale rarely attempted in modern cinema.
The excitement and anticipation around the film are already immense. Nolan’s last outing, Oppenheimer, dominated the 2024 Academy Awards, taking home multiple Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. That momentum, combined with the timeless weight of The Odyssey, positions the film as one of the most talked-about releases on the horizon.
But even before the film hits screens, Nolan has already sparked a larger conversation - one that connects ancient mythology directly to modern superhero culture.

Christopher Nolan draws a bold parallel between The Odyssey and modern superheroes
During his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Christopher Nolan drew a direct comparison between ancient Greek epics and modern superhero storytelling.
“The thing about Homer, it is the Marvel of its day," Nolan said. He also called Homer the George Lucas of that time. Nolan also expanded on how ancient epics and modern comics reflect a shared human desire to imagine godlike beings living among us and how most of Marvel and DC is a result of Homeric epics. His interpretation reframes the genre not as something new but as a continuation of one of the oldest storytelling traditions.
The final trailer of The Odyssey was unveiled on May 5, offering the most detailed look yet at the film ahead of its July 17, 2026, release. While the visuals promise a grand cinematic experience, and Robert Pattinson took center stage, it is Nolan's philosophical framing of the story that has the audience and film lovers all over the world impatiently waiting for this film.
And if Nolan’s interpretation defines the idea behind the film, the scale of The Odyssey reflects just how far he’s pushing that vision.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is one of his most ambitious projects yet
The Odyssey features one of the most expansive casts Christopher Nolan has assembled, led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland playing his son Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Robert Pattinson and many other greats. The ensemble alone signals the scale of the project.
The film follows Odysseus’ long journey back home after the Trojan War, facing mythical threats like the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, Circe, and Calypso, while his family waits for his return. It’s a story that has endured for centuries, now being retold through Nolan’s lens.

Technically, the film has already achieved a major milestone as the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX cameras, continuing Nolan’s push for immersive cinematic experiences and pushing greater boundaries for film and cinema. With a reported $250 million budget, it is one of the most ambitious productions of his career.
The release also carries an interesting parallel to Nolan’s recent past. Just as Oppenheimer shared its release window with Barbie in 2023, The Odyssey is set to arrive just two weeks before Spider-Man: Brand New Day - interestingly, a film also starring Tom Holland, who also plays a key role in Nolan’s epic. As the film is all set to release, The Odyssey proves our oldest myths still echo in today’s superheroes, bridging ancient imagination with modern spectacle.
