Markiplier has officially revealed when fans will finally be able to watch Iron Lung at home, confirming that the breakout horror film will debut exclusively on YouTube on May 31 following its successful theatrical run. The creator announced the release date during a panel at Cannes, where he also explained why YouTube remained the natural home for the film’s next chapter.

The psychological horror project, based on David Szymanski’s cult indie game of the same name, became one of 2026’s most unexpected success stories after grossing over $51 million worldwide against a reported budget of roughly $3 million. Written, directed, self-financed and headlined by Markiplier himself, the film quickly drew attention as a rare example of a creator-led theatrical success with minimal traditional marketing.

But while the box office numbers surprised many industry watchers, Markiplier’s decision about where the movie would land next may feel far less surprising to longtime fans.

How Iron Lung turned into one of horror’s surprise success stories?

Long before its streaming rollout was confirmed, Iron Lung had already established itself as one of the year’s biggest independent horror breakthroughs. Despite arriving with a modest production budget and almost no major advertising push, the film managed to outperform expectations by leaning heavily on Markiplier’s online audience and years of credibility within horror gaming communities.

Adapted from David Szymanski’s claustrophobic indie horror game, the film expanded the original premise into a feature-length story set inside a deteriorating submarine navigating an ocean of blood on a distant moon.

Rather than relying heavily on jump scares, the story leaned into isolation, tension and psychological dread — elements that had already helped the original game build a devoted cult following.

But for Markiplier, bringing the movie to YouTube appears to be less about convenience and more about returning to the platform that helped make the project possible in the first place.

Why Markiplier chose YouTube for Iron Lung’s digital release?

Although Iron Lung had a surprisingly lengthy theatrical run, Markiplier explained that YouTube always felt like the most logical destination for the film because of his longstanding relationship with the platform and the audience he built there over the years.

“I’m pretty loyal to [YouTube],” Markiplier said while speaking during a Cannes panel, explaining why the movie will debut exclusively on the platform for purchase.
