Kevin Feige never imagined Spider-Man: Brand New Day would go on to clinch titles from Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios has struck gold with Brand New Day, with the movie already reaching the billion-dollar mark within just four days of release. When it was generally assumed that the era of superhero movies was almost on the decline, Brand New Day swooped in and revitalized the trust the industry once had in superhero flicks. 

The trust that went missing these past few years led Feige to never expect what Brand New Day was actually capable of doing at the box office.

Kevin Feige is currently the main man behind the four largest opening weekends in history as CEO of Marvel Studios and creator of the expansive and incredibly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of them happens to be the latest Spider-Man film that also sits at the top of that list. But the architect himself had no idea what his creation was destined to become.

In a recent interview with Variety, Feige talked a great deal about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, like Tom Holland’s ever-growing popularity as Peter Parker, Sadie Sink’s grand MCU debut as Jean Grey, what Brand New Day’s success means for Avengers: Doomsday, and the records his latest movie has been shattering. When asked if he had any clue before the release that Brand New Day would break Avengers: Endgame’s record, Feige went with the most honest answer.   

“I didn’t — for all the reasons I don’t think anyone did, because of COVID, because of the beating that theatrical took for so long,” Feige said.  

He, however, explained further in the Variety interview that records are meant to be broken, and it has always been superhero movies with all the opening records. For example, Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie did $100M at the opening for the first time; his third movie opened at $150M, which was also a first, and then the first Avengers opened at $200M. So, somewhere he knew that it was always possible that Endgame's record would be broken, but the past five or six years did not let him believe that notion completely.   

One of the important questions asked about the film was the reason behind the decision to keep Sadie Sink’s character a secret, and Kevin Feige has finally given a satisfactory answer.

For those who have not seen the movie, Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But her character was hidden before the release of the movie, only marketed as a key figure in the story of Peter Parker. Now Kevin Feige has removed the tarp of secrecy and explained why they took that route.

"It’s purely about creating the best possible opening weekend experience for the audience," Feige explained in the same interview with Variety. 

 The MCU fans are aware of Jean Grey's stature within the Marvel Universe, as Feige himself is aware, and her position gives her a pivotal role in the MCU's future. This probably means Sadie Sink can appear in the coming Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. For now, Kevin Feige is basking in the glory of Brand New Day’s commercial and critical success before he gets ready for his second biggest release of the year - Doomsday.
