One of the most iconic moments from the original 1965 Get Smart series arrives when Agent Maxwell Smart, played by Don Adams, attempts to answer a ringing shoe phone, only to fumble it repeatedly while maintaining deadpan composure. That perfect blend of bumbling incompetence and suave confidence defined the character for five seasons, earning the show seven Emmy Awards and cementing its place in television history.

Now, more than six decades after the series premiere, Warner Bros. is preparing to bring Agent Smart back to the big screen.

John Mulaney is eyeing the lead role of Maxwell Smart in Warner Bros.' developing Get Smart reboot, according to Deadline. The project is still in its early stages, with Seth Grahame-Smith attached to write the screenplay. Andrew Lazar and Chuck Roven are also attached as producers.

The potential casting feels especially fitting for a character built around precise comedic timing. Mulaney is a four-time Emmy-winning comedian, writer and actor who most recently hosted, wrote and executive produced Netflix's Everybody's Live with John Mulaney. He is also set to appear as EA founder Trip Hawkins in David O. Russell's Madden.

Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, Get Smart ran for 138 episodes between 1965 and 1970. The series followed Smart, Agent 99 and the CONTROL organization as they battled KAOS through elaborate spy missions and absurd gadgets. The 2008 movie starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson earned about $230.7 million worldwide against an $80 million budget.

With Mulaney potentially inheriting the shoe phone, another classic franchise is taking a dramatically different route back to the screen.

While Get Smart is returning through comedy, Henry Cavill is stepping into the sword-swinging world of Highlander. Cavill stars as Connor MacLeod in Chad Stahelski's reboot, taking over the role originated by Christopher Lambert in the 1986 cult classic.

First-look images showed Cavill wielding a massive sword, while footage presented at CinemaCon teased brutal sword fights, motorcycle chases and a neon-lit action sequence influenced by Stahelski's John Wick filmmaking. The cast includes Russell Crowe as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, alongside Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela and Max Zhang.

Production was delayed after Cavill suffered an injury during preparation, though filming later resumed across international locations and has wrapped filming. The contrast between the two projects is striking. One is built around deadpan spy comedy, while the other is shaping up as a hard-hitting fantasy action epic.
