Some times a movie lands in the theaters and becomes so big that the mania around it is unprecedented. The studio gets a massive payday, the actors get recognition and the movie gets massive sequel buzz. But with great buzz comes great speculations, and in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day they are as mind-boggling as the success of the movie. The latest of these bewildering rumors are something to do with a 10-picture deal signed by Tom Holland to keep playing the web-slinger till 2040.

Is this far-fetched deal a reality? Or is it just some wishful thinking of online fanpages? The truth needs to be discussed behind these extraordinary claims.

It is entirely untrue that Tom Holland signed a 10-picture contract to play Spider-Man until 2040. Although it is a widely circulated online myth, this rumor does not really even come close to what the makers, especially Sony’s Amy Pascal and Marvel’s Kevin Feige, have been hinting about the future of Spider-Man through various interviews.  

Amy Pascal and other producers have already disclosed plans to begin a new trilogy with Tom Holland, beginning with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. However, movies beyond the fourth chapter have not been officially and fully approved as a permanent block. If they have not even formulated a plan for the next two films, then why would they get ahead of themselves and go on signing Tom Holland for the next 10 films.

Moreover, instead of an absolute locked-in multi-film greenlight, Sony and Marvel continue to negotiate deals on a movie-by-movie basis. In addition, Kevin Feige and Tom Holland have also stated that future adventures depend on continued cooperation and plot development, rather than a fixed slate of films. Furthermore, the rumor about Tom Holland playing Peter Parker till 2040 is just absurd as the actor is already 30 now, and there is no way he can carry the mantle all by himself by the time he is 44.

Besides these obvious arguments against the rumors, there is also the fact that Tom Holland has been clear about passing the baton in recent interviews.

Since Spider-Man: No Way Home, there has been a clear, long-term strategy in place to eventually hand the reins to a successor, according to Tom Holland. This was a big revelation that came directly from the Brand New Day star during a July 30 appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. In addition to mentioning performers like Owen Cooper as possible successors, he has talked about introducing or building up next-generation characters like Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman.

He further mentioned how Robert Downey Jr. helped him when he first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe and indicated a great desire to mentor the next actor to take on the part just like that. One of the important things that Holland said was that he does not want to stay in the franchise for too long. He has been very clear about wanting a graceful exit from the franchise rather than overstaying his welcome.
