A revenge-driven space adventure. A battle-scarred Kryptonian hero. And Jason Momoa's chaotic Lobo thrown into the mix. Supergirl has never looked like a traditional superhero movie, prompting many fans to wonder whether DC Studios was preparing to push Kara Zor-El into R-rated territory.
The question only grew louder as trailers and footage revealed a much rougher version of the character than audiences have typically seen on screen. Inspired by Tom King's acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series, the film appears determined to explore some of the darker corners of the DC Universe.
Now, the movie's official age rating has finally been revealed.

Is Supergirl R-rated?
No, Supergirl is not R-rated.
The Motion Picture Association has officially classified the upcoming DCU film as PG-13 for "sequences of strong violence, action, language, and smoking."
The rating means younger viewers can still watch the film, though parental guidance is advised due to some of its more mature content. While the inclusion of "strong violence" suggests audiences can expect intense action sequences, the movie remains accessible to the broad audience DC Studios is targeting.
The classification also places Supergirl alongside Superman as one of the DC Universe's PG-13 theatrical releases, despite its noticeably darker tone. While recent DC projects such as Peacemaker have embraced more adult-oriented storytelling, the latest rating indicates the studio is keeping its big-screen Kryptonian heroes accessible to a wide audience. At the same time, the inclusion of "strong violence" suggests the film may still push the boundaries of what viewers typically expect from a PG-13 superhero adventure.
Yet the reasons behind the rating offer an even clearer picture of the version of Kara Zor-El audiences are about to meet.
Why Supergirl received a PG-13 rating?
Recent set reports suggest Supergirl will be considerably edgier than its Kryptonian counterpart, with DC Studios leaning into Kara Zor-El's rougher personality while still keeping the film within PG-13 territory.
"Obviously this is a PG-13 movie, so it's limited when it comes to ratings, but we have been being like, 'Is this her f***? Is this her f***?... We have different options. I think there's one that's special in Craig's heart, but we are having a lot of fun with it,'" DC Studios executive producer Chantal Nong Vo said during a set visit reported by /Film, referring to discussions about where to place the movie's one permitted PG-13 F-bomb.
Vo later described the film as being "on the edgier side of everybody," suggesting that director Craig Gillespie's adaptation will push the boundaries of a PG-13 rating without crossing into full R-rated territory.

That approach aligns closely with the source material. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow follows Kara on a dangerous intergalactic journey alongside Ruthye and Krypto while forcing her to confront the trauma of Krypton's destruction. The film will also feature Jason Momoa's highly anticipated debut as Lobo, adding another layer of intensity to the adventure.
The result appears to be a superhero movie that is darker, rougher and more emotionally complex than Superman, while still remaining accessible to a wide audience.
