The New York Knicks ended their 53-year drought on Sunday with an incredible victory against the San Antonio Spurs to win the NBA Championship for the first time since 1973. The Knicks had a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals going into the fifth game and did not waste the opportunity to create history. The internet is abuzz with the clips of their playoff run and heroic final efforts, but what has also been making rounds is the footage of famous actor and filmmaker Ben Stiller capturing their whole journey on his iPhone.

In an interview at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, prior to Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals, Ben Stiller revealed that he is archiving the video he records at courtside at New York Knicks games, potentially for a future documentary about the franchise, per The Hollywood Reporter. The Tropic Thunder director was questioned about the video and whether he was archiving it during an appearance with Kenny Smith on ESPN's NBA Tip-Off.

“There’s a project in the works. But look, I’d be doing it anyway — but it is part of a bigger project. [The access] is insane. To be able to have that point of view. It’s fun to be able to share it with people,” Stiller revealed.

Before Stiller could reply, Shaquille O'Neal, who was also on the pregame panel, playfully chastised Smith for asking Stiller about a project that is not yet formally announced. For this, Stiller jokingly thanked O'Neal, calling him his "PR person" before answering Smith's question about his courtside iPhone footage.

There have been rumors that Stiller has been filming an HBO documentary on the 2026 season of the franchise, via The Hollywood Reporter. He acknowledged that a project is underway, but he refrained from stating that it is a documentary for the big production house. To be fair, this is not the director's first entanglement with the documentary style; he directed Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost, an Apple TV documentary on his parents, and served as executive producer for the HBO bowling documentary Born to Bowl.

There is also some insight available on how Ben Stiller is going about filming this project.

Ben Stiller uses a very unique style of film shooting

Ben Stiller has reportedly been using his iPhone from Celebrity Row and during behind-the-scenes team access meetings to record the New York Knicks' Finals adventure. Stiller's style of filmmaking is what sets the video apart. He records in Apple Log format rather than regular smartphone video. Flat, grey-toned film that retains information in highlights and shadows is captured by the setting.

The recordings are then color-graded by the filmmaker, who just released a dramatic black-and-white shot that resembles a classic documentary film and captures Game 4 celebrations. Fans now enjoy a unique view of the action and crowd environment because of his incredibly broad courtside viewpoints. The potential Knicks documentary by Ben Stiller is not going to be like any other sports documentary; instead, it promises to be a never-before-seen viewpoint of the whole journey.
