Comedy icon Mel Brooks officially turned 100 on June 28, marking a remarkable milestone in a career that has spanned more than seven decades. While the EGOT winner is celebrated for classics like The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Spaceballs, his life away from the camera has also been shaped by a close-knit family with deep ties to the entertainment industry.
Across two marriages, Brooks became the father of four children, several of whom followed him into creative careers. From his enduring love story with the late Anne Bancroft to his son Max Brooks becoming a bestselling author in his own right, the filmmaker's family has quietly built a legacy alongside his own.
As Brooks celebrates his centennial birthday, here is a closer look at the family behind one of Hollywood's most influential comedy legends.

Mel Brooks' two marriages and the family behind the comedy icon
Before becoming one half of one of Hollywood's most admired marriages, Mel Brooks was married to actress and dancer Florence Baum. The couple married in the early 1950s and welcomed three children together: daughter Stephanie Brooks and sons Nicholas "Nicky" Brooks and Edward "Eddie" Brooks. Their marriage ended in 1962 after nearly a decade together.
Although Brooks' three eldest children have largely stayed away from the same level of public attention as their father, each pursued creative interests. Stephanie reportedly studied film at New York University before working in the industry, while Nicky built a career as a writer and producer. He later collaborated professionally with his father on the 2016 film Sam, writing the screenplay while Brooks served as executive producer. Eddie, meanwhile, studied music and made a brief on-screen appearance as a child before choosing a more private life.
Brooks found lasting love again in 1964 when he married Academy Award-winning actress Anne Bancroft. Their marriage endured for more than four decades until Bancroft's death from cancer in 2005, becoming one of Hollywood's most enduring relationships.
Bancroft enjoyed an acclaimed career of her own, winning an Academy Award for The Miracle Worker while also starring in celebrated films such as The Graduate, The Elephant Man, To Be or Not to Be and G.I. Jane. Despite both building hugely successful careers, Brooks and Bancroft often spoke warmly about supporting one another's work while maintaining a strong family life.
Together, the pair welcomed one son who would eventually carve out his own successful career—albeit in a very different corner of popular culture.
Meet Mel Brooks' four children
Mel Brooks' four children have each taken different paths, even if creativity has remained a common thread throughout the family. Although none has pursued fame in quite the same way as their father, each has carved out a unique identity, whether through work in entertainment or by embracing a more private life.
Stephanie Brooks, the eldest and Brooks' only daughter, has largely kept her life out of the spotlight. While she pursued film studies and later worked within the entertainment industry, she has rarely made public appearances, preferring a quieter life than her famous father.
Nicholas "Nicky" Brooks has spent much of his career behind the camera as a writer and producer. Beyond penning the screenplay for Sam (2016), he has also produced independent projects, including Beautiful and Confession on Pleasant Street, building a career that has largely unfolded behind the scenes.
Edward "Eddie" Brooks has largely chosen to keep his personal and professional life private. While he briefly appeared on screen as a child, he has since stayed away from Hollywood's spotlight. His daughter, Samantha Brooks, has occasionally represented the family's next generation in public, appearing alongside Mel Brooks during interviews and special appearances.
The youngest member of the family, however, has become the most recognizable public figure after Mel Brooks himself.
How Max Brooks built a legacy beyond his famous parents
Born in 1972, Maximillian Michael Brooks—better known as Max Brooks—is the only child Mel Brooks shared with Anne Bancroft. Although he briefly explored acting with appearances in television series such as Melrose Place, Roseanne and 7th Heaven, he ultimately found his calling as a writer.
Max first gained widespread attention with The Zombie Survival Guide before achieving international success with World War Z, the bestselling novel that was later adapted into the blockbuster film starring Brad Pitt. He has also worked as a writer for Saturday Night Live and established himself as one of the most recognizable voices in speculative fiction and survival literature.

Despite forging a career far removed from his father's brand of comedy, Max has frequently spoken about the admiration he has for Brooks. In PEOPLE's documentary feature marking his father's 99th birthday, Max described him as "a true genius," praising the courage that defined both his filmmaking and his approach to storytelling.
That admiration runs both ways. Brooks has often celebrated his family's accomplishments while continuing to create new projects himself. Even at 100, he remains active, with Spaceballs 2 in development, voice acting projects underway and a legacy that continues to influence generations of filmmakers, writers and comedians.
